Winter Wellness Series

WW_PreviewThumbnailFor the next several weeks, I will be sharing Health tips to be sure you have a Healthy Winter.  Skipping meals is not always the healthy way to lose weight.  I will be sharing with you, some healthy tips to keep the weight gain away!   Enjoy!   (Winter Wellness tips 1 – 10 )

Register today for Health and Wellness Newsletter!

Winter Wellness  Tip #1:

Think twice about skipping mealsIf you’re thinking about skipping meals before that miraculous holiday dinner, you should think twice, especially if you’re looking to avoid gaining those dreaded holiday pounds. So good news – eat during the day AND at night – just make sure to make good, healthy choices for each mini meal.

Winter Wellness Tip #2

enjoying every biteTwo heaping plates full of delicious, homemade food sounds sooo good – but I’m sticking to my healthy holiday feast plan this year – only 1 small plate of food. (No, I’m not crazy!) In fact, by eating slowly, I’ll be able to enjoy every bite all while taking part in an awesome conversation with my family. (And that’s something I’ll be proud to walk away with!)

Winter Wellness Tip #3

Eat dont drink your caloriesI’ve always preferred to eat my calories versus drinking them, especially when the food is much better than the drink choices! Soda, wine, beer, eggnog… keep it out of your cup and out of your regrets.

Winter Wellness Tip #4

Get creative with holiday exerciseStanding in line at the mall, wrapping gifts, and giving hugs DOES NOT count as exercise. Get creative with your exercise routine. Bonus points if you include the family!

Winter Wellness Tip #5

Small plates- healthy eating 70percent vegetablesSomeone asked if a small plate means we can eat whatever we want during our holiday feast and the answer is… as long as 70% is vegetables, you have 30% of your plate to fill with another healthy choice – so dig in!

Winter Wellness Tip #6

Tip 6 - Avoid extra calories by using gravy - butter- olive oil - etcDid you know that most italians don’t put out olive oil, butter, or extra gravy on the dinner table? They truly want you to enjoy the love and quality of ingredients they put into the main entrée and not to overindulge in side items. Since adapting to this style of living, I’ve noticed how refined my palate has become and how many unnecessary calories I’ve been able to avoid!

Winter Wellness Tip #7

Tip 7 - Chew and enjoyCHEW. YOUR. FOOD. By intently chewing your food, you’re not only making it easier to digest, but you’re also giving yourself a chance to feel full before you finish all the food on your plate. (You’ll also savor every ingredient. After all, good food is like music you can taste. You need only to be aware to stop and savor it!)

Winter Wellness Tip #8

Tip 8 -there will be left oversAre you the host of this year’s holiday feast? Be prepared to let guests bring home leftovers and feel free to encourage them to bring their own take-away containers!

Winter Wellness Tip #9

Tip 9 - avoid stressful topics at mealsI say it year after year, and yet I see it happen year after year… avoid stressful topics at the dinner table, especially if you’re tempted to over-eat when stressed!

Winter Wellness Tip #10

Tip 10 - Fill empty time with activitiesFill in empty time between courses with movement-based activities. Dance, sing, play, make memories!

If you appreciate this Winter Wellness tip, please pass it along!

Citrusy Kale Salad W/ Blueberries and Pepitas

From the monthly calgiant.com e-newsletter. For a vegan version, replace the honey with an approved sugar of choice.

PREP 15 MINS
COOK 5 MINS
4 Servings

Citrusy Kale Salad w. blueberries and pepitas

Citrusy Kale Salad w. blueberries and pepitas

INGREDIENTS

1 bunch curly kale (I tried lacinato kale and next time will try Russian kale)
2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
3⁄4 teaspoon sea salt
1 lemon, juice and zest of
1 orange, juice and zest of
1teaspoon honey (or alternative sugar)
1⁄2avocado, cubed (second taste test or helping I skipped the avocado)
1cup fresh blueberries
2tablespoons pepitas (toasted)

DIRECTIONS
Variations-Instead of blueberries and pepitas try any of the following: blackberries and walnuts, sliced strawberries and pecans, raspberries and sliced almonds, marionberries and hazelnuts (<<–Oregon style!). I chose blackberry and walnut.

Remove kale leaves from the stem and chop into bite sized pieces (or tear using hands).

Place kale in a large bowl and drizzle 1 tablespoon olive oil and salt into leaves, massaging with hands. Do this for a few minutes, massaging the olive oil well into the leaves. Set aside. (Leaves should begin to wilt a little.).

Whisk together lemon and orange juice and zest, remaining 1 Tbsp olive oil and honey. Season with a small amount of salt and pepper to taste. Pour dressing over the kale leaves.

Add the avocado, berries and seeds and toss all together. Do not add the dressing, avocado, berries or seeds to the salad until just before serving.

Avoid this Curcumin?

Curcumin-skin-pigmentation-diy-home-remediesTurmeric has long been revered as a spice, dye, and remedy to promote health and wellness. While turmeric is perhaps best known for its spicy flavor and as the key ingredient in curry powders, it’s also used to add color and as a preservative and has a long history for health benefits.
The majority of the benefits can be attributed to curcumin, an antioxidant that gives turmeric its yellow pigment. Curcumin is the most abundant of turmeric’s curcuminoid complex, which make up only about 3 – 5% of turmeric. So, while turmeric contains curcumin, it’s found in relatively very small amounts.
In addition, the potential health benefits of curcumin are limited by poor bioavailability. If you don’t absorb it, you can’t reap the expected health benefits. As a result, several strategies have been used to improve absorption, and while some have shown promise, a recent well-controlled study demonstrated a new water-soluble formulation (CurcuWIN®) resulted in 46 times greater absorption than standard curcumin powder.
It’s also important to know that many turmeric/curcumin extracts contain residues (above the established safety limit) of the highly toxic solvent “EDC,” a known carcinogen. So, you’ll want to choose a highly absorbable form of curcumin that’s free from this solvent!

Health Benefits of Curcumin

With over 3,000 published studies, curcumin’s one of the most well-researched herbs. It has antioxidant and antimicrobial effects (to help ward of bacteria, fungi, and viruses), yet, it’s best known for its ability to promote a healthy inflammatory response. Curcumin’s been shown to help ensure levels of several key inflammatory markers are in a normal, healthy range.
Not surprisingly, curcumin has been shown to contribute to a variety of health benefits, such as:
*Brain Health, including supporting brain function, cognitive function, mood, and mental health.
*Heart Health: by increasing antioxidant capacity, promoting healthy levels of inflammatory markers, and helping maintain healthy blood flow.
*Joint Health: It’s perhaps best known for helping ease joint discomfort and stiffness. One 3-month trial found supplementing with curcumin daily reduced joint discomfort by 58% (vs. 2% for the placebo group). In an 8-month trial, curcumin led to a 93% reduction in joint discomfort (vs. a 12% reduction in the placebo group).
*Antioxidant: By scavenging free radicals and inducing an antioxidant response, curcumin has also been shown to have a protective effect on the mitochondria, which are responsible for energy production.
Curcumin = Solid Gold?
In short, both scientific research and real-world results suggest there are numerous health benefits of curcumin. However, did you know that certain “healthy” foods and spices can actually DAMAGE your DNA and accelerate aging in your body? Age spots, wrinkles, saggy skin, joint stiffness, decreased mobility, memory issues, low energy, increased fatigue, hormonal decline, weight gain… the list goes on and on.
Don’t fall victim to these nightmare age-accelerating foods any longer!
To your success,
Katharine
