Dear Katharine,

Most of us have been warned at some point about the importance of good posture, but chances are that a lot of us haven’t really given this too much thought. Sure, no one wants to end up permanently stooped over, or to find ourselves suffering from chronic back pain, but what does good posture mean beyond appearance? What does it mean for our bodies?

Good posture goes beyond looks. It helps us to stand, walk, sit, and lie in positions with the least amount of strain on the muscles and ligaments activated during movement. It also keeps our bones and joints in alignment, and it helps to support the ligaments holding the spine together to reduce the likelihood of injury.

Poor posture, on the other hand, can lead to strain and cause our bodies to be out of alignment. Stress, obesity, pregnancy, weak muscles, tight muscles, bad working posture, and high-heeled shoes are all major contributors to poor posture.

Luckily, over time many poor posture habits can be reversed by simply practicing good posture.

Follow these instructions to maintain the proper seated and standing positions:

Proper Sitting Position
-Keep your feet flat on the floor or up on a footrest if they don’t touch the ground
-Do not cross your legs. our ankles should rest on the floor (or footrest) in front of your knees
-Sit forward enough in your chair so that there is a small gap between the backs of your knees and your chair.
-Your knees should not be positioned over your feet.
-Relax your shoulders and hold your forearms parallel to the ground.
-Avoid sitting in the same position for long periods of time.

Proper Standing Position
-Maintain the bulk of your weight on the balls of your feet.
-Keep your knees slightly bent. Do not lock them!
-Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart.
-Let your arms hang naturally at your sides.
-Tuck your stomach slightly in.
-Keep your head level so that your earlobes are in line with your shoulders.
-Shift your weight from your toes to your heels, or one foot to the other, if you have to stand for a long time.

Dear Mindful Practitioner,

Many of us work hard to eat right and exercise our bodies, but often the mind gets overlooked when it comes to our health.

Meditation often considered an exercise for the brain, is a great way to focus on the health of the mind. Through this mindful practice, the pituitary gland in the brain secretes hormones called endorphins, which result in an amplified feeling of wellbeing.

People often use meditation for stress relief, but there are many other benefits of creating a meditation practice, including:

Anxiety
Relieving stress through meditation has also been known to lessen anxiety, thus creating a calm space for the mind to relax by being present in the moment.

Emotional Health
Routine meditation has been found to decrease inflammatory chemicals in the brain that can affect mood, emotions, and cause depression, which allows for more opportunity to focus on a more positive outlook on life.

Self-Awareness
Taking the time to sit alone can lead to a greater understanding of self and how that self-corresponds to other people.

Sleep
Because meditation settles the mind and body, it is a great practice for helping people with falling asleep and staying asleep.

Pain
Pain is connected to a person’s state of mind, so by relieving stress and balancing the mind and body, a person becomes better equipped to manage pain.

To start your meditation practice, it’s a good idea to set a routine, even if you are starting with just a few minutes a day. The best way to do that is to choose a good time when you can take a few moments to yourself to find a quiet, relaxing spot (parents, this may even be the bathroom!).

Once you are set up with your time and spot, find a comfortable position to either sit on the floor or in a chair – your eyes will be closed for this.

  1. Set Your Intention
Come to your meditation ready to bring yourself relief, to connect, relax, or decompress. Whatever your reason for choosing meditation, this is what you want to come to the practice with.
  2. Relax the Body
Once you are seated with your eyes closed, you want to focus on your breath, and how it is coming in and out of the body as you breathe. Move through your body in your mind and take note of any tension or pain. When you come to this area, stop for a moment and focus on sending your breath to that area.
  3. Pay Attention to Senses
Keeping your mind focused on the sensations you are feeling is a good way to keep the mind centered, or to keep it from wandering.
  4. Come Back to the Body
If you do find your mind wandering, that’s okay, just keep bringing your thoughts back to your breath until the end of your meditation.

This is not going to be easy at first, but the benefits of meditation make it worth it to keep on trying. It does get easier!

Sex!???

Dear Health Enthusiast,

Although often considered a ‘taboo’ subject, issues with sexual performance are far more common than most people think. The trouble arises when prescription medication fails to deliver desired results, which an overwhelming amount of people experience – between 10 to 52% of men and 25% to 63% of women. As sexual health has always been a personal matter and one which can easily become entangled with issues of self-worth and self-image, the failure of medical drugs to deliver expected results can contribute to low levels of self-esteem and emotional distress.

The fact of the matter is that just as every relationship is different, every BODY is different too, and will respond in largely contrasting ways to medication. Functional medicine, however, focuses on helping the individual to not only figure out what is best for their unique needs and symptoms but also how to PREVENT it from occurring again and lower the risks of the condition worsening, using natural treatment options.

Issues surrounding sexual performance can include (but are not limited to):

Erectile dysfunction in men
Lowered libido
Vaginal dryness
Sexual performance anxiety
All of these conditions have in the past been treated with pharmaceutical drugs, a large amount of which can have negative side-effects when used over a long period of time. With the help of natural remedies, many people have seen their symptoms decrease significantly and sometimes even completely subside.

What Are Some Functional Medicine Techniques?

By looking at the individual as a whole as a means of treating their sexual performance issues, functional health professionals can identify the root cause of the issue instead of simply making it disappear temporarily. The only way to truly heal from an issue like this is to dig deep and find the root cause – whether it be physical, mental, environmental, emotional, or spiritual. These are the elements which functional health focuses on in order to get to the true cause of the issues like these that often manifest themselves physically.

In terms of sexual health, it is of utmost importance to recognize and acknowledge your own struggles with performance. Not being open to these issues is often the primary cause of them worsening and festering over time. Learning as much as you can about the issue – be it a hormonal imbalance due to anxiety, a nutritional issue, or something else entirely – is the best and only way to make effective changes.

There are foods you can include in your diet that boost sexual health and increase libido – while we can’t necessarily promise they will increase your performance, improving your nutrition WILL help to ensure that your sexual health is improved significantly!

Foods to boost sexual health include:

Spinach
Dark chocolate
Peppers
Green tea
Oysters
Pesto
Ginger
Pumpkin seeds
Bananas
Potatoes
Fatty Fish
Coffee
Red wine
What combinations of these will you try?

Dear Friends,

In the last decade, there has been a rise in trendy juice bars popping up that offer signature juice blends catered to health-conscious people. This is because juicing has become widely accepted as a premium way to get fruits and veggies into your diet quickly and easily.

And let’s not forget the amount of fruits and vegetables! On average, a 4-ounce cup of juice contains a whole serving of vitamin and mineral rich fruits and vegetables. These powerhouse foods contain nutrients that help to protect your body against inflammation, cardiovascular disease, and even cancer. Plus, juicing removes the fiber from fruits and vegetables which allows those nutrients to absorb very quickly into the gut and bloodstream.

Another wonderful benefit of juicing is the boost of chlorophyll (the green pigment found in plants) it gives the body. Chlorophyll is great for rebuilding red blood cells, helping to detoxify the liver, and protecting the skin from toxin absorption from the environment.

When discussing the benefits of juicing, it is important to note that we are referring to juice purchased at a juice bar or made at home with a juicer. Often bottled juices from the store have added ingredients, namely sugar. Be on the lookout for that if when making a purchase. Fresh squeezed is the best option!

Here are some great, chlorophyll rich greens to add to your juice:
-kale
-spinach
-cucumber
-parsley
-beet greens
-wheatgrass
-celery
-romaine lettuce

If you have a juicer at home, try this mouthwatering recipe that is loaded with healthy goodness:

Beetroot and Ginger
(For 2 pints)
4 beetroots
4 carrots
2 lemons
6 apples
4 inches of peeled ginger

You want your juice to be as fresh as possible, so cut this recipe in half if you will only be consuming one serving at a time.

Dear Katharine,

Tea is one of the most widely consumed beverages in the world, and it’s no surprise people have been drinking tea for centuries for the pleasure, routine, taste, and for the many health benefits.

Also, tea has a high concentration of antioxidants, which may contribute to the prevention of cancer, osteoporosis, and cardiovascular diseases.

Here are some of the characteristics and healing properties of the major tea families:

Black Tea
This tea is more oxidized than other teas, which gives it a darker color, and a stronger flavor profile.
Health Benefits of Black Tea:
-aids the digestive system
-anti-inflammatory effects on the body
-protects the skin
-burns calories

Green Tea
This tea has not been processed as much as other forms, and so it has a gentler color and flavor profile.

Health Benefits of Green Tea:
-protects against cancer
-maintains heart health
-increases fat burning

Oolong Tea
This tea is made by a process of withering the leaves and drying them in the sun. This creates a light colored tea with a mild flavor profile.
Health Benefits of Oolong Tea:
-manages diabetes
-protects your teeth

White Tea
This tea is not oxidized or rolled, and this creates a mild flavor profile.
Health Benefits of White Tea:
-supports mental health
-fights bacteria

Herbal Tea
This tea is comprised of the dried properties of petals, leaves, seeds, roots, stems, and petals of a multitude of plants and flowers.

Health Benefits of Herbal Tea:
-aids in digestion
-relieves anxiety and stress
-helps with sleep
-provides anti-inflammatory properties

With all of the benefits of drinking tea, choosing a tea for your specific needs is a great way to discover what is out there, because with over 1500 varieties, finding one that fits your ideal flavor profile can be a little overwhelming.

Here are a few common symptoms that many of us experience, and a tea blend that can help:

Stress Blend
-chamomile
-lavender
-passionflower

Fatigue Blend
-mint
-nettles
-ginseng
-licorice root

Exhaustion Blend
-chamomile
-nettles
-licorice root
-lavender
-ashwagandha Root
-clove

How to Drink Your Tea
-Bring a kettle of water to a boil
-Add 2-3 tablespoons of tea to an infuser or tea bag and add to your water
-Cover and steep for 5-7 minutes
-Uncover and remove the bag or infuser.
-Enjoy your tea!

Dear friend,

Were you aware that the average American consumes about 152 pounds of sugar a year! That breaks down to roughly 22 teaspoons a day for each person in America.

High sugar intake has been directly related to obesity, type 2 diabetes, dementia, depression, ADHD, acne, heart disease, infertility, and impotence.

The sad truth is that sugar addiction is not an emotional disorder – sugar cravings are a biological disorder, fueled by the body’s hormones and neurotransmitters. This often leads to uncontrolled eating, which in turn gives cause to the reason why nearly 70 percent of Americans are considered overweight.

Brain

Aside from the toll sugar takes on your health, here are some other ways sugar affects you negatively:

Motivation
Sugar affects motivation by reducing dopamine, the motivation neurochemical in your brain.

Brain Fog
Sugar causes brain fog by spiking the hormone insulin, which gives you the rush after you eat sugar. The spike, then, leads to a crash as your insulin plummets.

Insatiability
Consuming sugar only provides temporary satisfaction, which can lead to overeating as we try to satiate by eating more.

Teeth Health
High sugar consumption causes tooth decay.

Now that you have read some of the scary truths about sugar consumption, the best way to see for yourself the effect sugar is having on your body and mind is to try cutting it out for at least 10 days.

Before you start a detox, it is a good idea to have a plan in place, because the cravings will be shockingly strong for the first few days. Here are some steps to follow to help get you ready:

Get in the Right Mindset
Prepare yourself by making the decision to clear your body of sugar. This is important because you won’t have success if you don’t set your mind to it.

Eat a Healthy Diet
Focus on eating healthy carbs, proteins, and fats. Eating healthily will help you feel better as your body starts its detox.

Build New Routines
It is hard to stop any addictive behavior cold turkey, so to soften the withdraw it is best to approach for your detox by gearing up with small changes to your routine, such as cutting cream and sugar from your morning coffee or cutting down on any beverages with sugar throughout the day.

Throw Out the Sugar
Get rid of all the candies and sweets you have in your pantry. And be sure to read those ingredient lists!

Dear Friend,

More than 12 percent of the US population suffers from thyroid problems today, and an estimated 20 million will suffer from some sort of thyroid imbalance in their lifetime.

One factor which may contribute to these overwhelming figures is that one-third of the world’s entire population also suffers from an iodine deficiency. (Click Here For Statistics)

As the cells in the thyroid gland are the only cells in the body which can absorb iodine, it follows that iodine deficiencies result in many thyroid-based hormonal issues, and vice-versa. It is by no means the single isolated cause of thyroid malfunction, yet it is thought to be one of the most dominant. That being said, it should always be taken into consideration when assessing thyroid health.

Other symptoms of thyroid imbalance can include:

  • fatigue
  • depression
  • irritability
  • weight changes
  • insomnia

Why is functional health a better path?

As every instance of every illness will have contrasting root and underlying causes, it makes no sense to treat every patient with generically mass-produced drugs that may or may not have the desired effect.

Functional healthcare for thyroid health aims at analyzing the unique lifestyle factors that have potentially contributed to an existing imbalance or the development of worsening symptoms.  Regardless of how it manifests, it is vital to gain an understanding of the unique functioning of your thyroid!

Become ‘Functionally Literate’

Thyroid issues are not uncommon, and yet each person experiences symptoms and root causes differently. We believe everyone deserves to be aware of their own root issues in order to receive the personalized treatment their illnesses require to help them go forward in life without a dependency on medical drugs.

Our hope is to enable all patients to become ‘literate’ in functional health, so as to maximize their chances of preventing the onset or reversing the effects of thyroid problems.

There are many conflicting opinions regarding the benefits of cruciferous vegetables such as kale, broccoli, and spinach for your thyroid health.

The conclusion functional experts come to, however, is that eating what YOU need for YOUR body and YOUR particular needs is the only way to correctly use nutrition as a means of preventative medicine.

This means that cultivating AWARENESS of your body is key to you obtaining optimum health.

We’re going to stand by the countless studies which assert leafy green and cruciferous vegetables as the most nourishing source of natural iodine for thyroid function and share a delicious green juice recipe for you to try!

Thyroid – Optimizing Green Juice
(originally from www.mindbodygreen.com)

  • ½ cup pineapple
  • 1 bushel of cilantro
  • 1 bushel of parsley
  • 1 cucumber
  • 1 beautiful stalk of fennel
  • 2 lemons
  • 1 to 3 pinches of ashwagandha root, powder
  • 6 drops of liquid chlorophyll extract

Instructions:

  • Juice all ingredients except ashwagandha root and chlorophyll. Add a few pinches of these after and ENJOY!

Of course, honor your body’s needs and respect if this is not the best option for you.

Chemical Laden Cleaners that are harmful!
Dear Friend,

Indoor air pollution ranks among the top environmental dangers, and the majority of that pollution comes from the cleaners that we use on a regular basis. Often we don’t even think to relate symptoms we have to the product we use! Yet, some of the immediate effects might be headaches, nausea, irritation to the nose or eyes, and dizziness.
It’s kind of hard to believe that one of the top pollutants is caused by something that could be eliminated entirely. The problem is, then how would we keep our homes clean?

The good news: there are options.
Chemical-laden cleaning products aren’t the only means for keeping your home nice and clean. Homemade, non-toxic cleaning products are easy to use, fun to make, and are definitely better for us and the environment.

Here are natural products you can start replacing those chemical products with now:

Baking Soda
Baking soda is great for deodorizing, shining, and cutting through grease and grime.

Castile Soap
Castile soap is made from plant oils and is used to clean surfaces and dishes.

Vinegar
Vinegar is a powerhouse cleaner that effectively eliminates soap scum, grease, and grime.

Lemon Juice
Natural lemon juice is great for cleaning mildew and mold, as well as for shining hard surfaces.

Olive Oil
Olive oil is good for both cleaning and polishing.

Try this recipe for a safe and effective all-purpose cleaner (except for wood):
-¾ cup water
-¼ cup rubbing alcohol
-5 to 10 drops of peppermint or lemon oil
-1 squirt of natural dish soap
Pour all ingredients into a 16-ounce spray bottle. Shake well before spraying onto a surface, and then wipe clean with a towel.

Dear Friend,

Functional health is a much more personal approach to healthcare. It ensures that each patient is treated according to their specific needs and imbalances individually, rather than treated as a diagnosis.

Aiming to return the body and mind to optimum balance and functionality, functional healthcare can often prove the most preferable route for women to embark upon to solve their health issues.

Functional healthcare can help with things such as:

Chronic Fatigue
Migraine Headaches
Anxiety and Depression
Insomnia and Sleep Disorders
Digestive Issues
Obesity and Weight Management
Hormonal Imbalances
Menopause
PMS (Premenstrual Syndrome)
Fertility Problems
Postpartum Issues

How Does it Work?

By using all natural methods and personalized care, functional healthcare aims to enable patients to not only cure their ailments but get to the root cause of them as well. Whether it be herbal medicine, nutritional therapy, or stress management, functional medicine techniques can greatly reduce the severity of many health complications and by doing so help to prevent them from progressing further.

Becoming better aware of your health issues and their potential causes, triggers, and treatments is a part of how functional medicine helps you to heal yourself and STAY healed. Getting to know all aspects of your health issue and implementing positive change to avoid them worsening cultivates awareness both in your body and in your mind in order to achieve optimum health.

Boosting hormonal function is vital in overall physical and mental health, Estrogen, in particular, is associated with the proper functioning of the female reproductive system, among many other benefits.

Try these foods for healthy hormones:

Seeds: flax seeds and sesame seeds

It’s a scary statistic not only because the dangers of drinking sugary drinks on the body, but also because the body requires ample amounts of water to help balance all of the body’s fluids, digest food, transport nutrients from food to the rest of the body, and to regulate the body’s temperature.

So basically, water is your body’s superpower.

Here are some of the other benefits of keeping your body adequately hydrated:

Drinking enough water allows the body to release toxins through sweat and urination.

Water is necessary for the digestion of food and to prevent constipation.

Promotes Weight Loss
Choosing water over a soda saves on the calories since water has zero! It also works to remove the by-products of fat, reduces hunger, and reduces eating intake when you start each meal by drinking a full glass of water.

Increases Energy
Your brain is over 70% water! Drinking water helps you with focus, concentration, and energy.

Water is the number one anti-aging treatment there is. It moisturizes your skin and keeps it soft and smooth. If that wasn’t enough, it also decreases wrinkles!

So how much water should you be drinking? The answer varies. Some suggest at least 8 (8 oz) glasses a day, and some suggest that the best way to determine how much is to take your body weight, divide it in half and drink half your weight in ounces. It’s a little different for everyone, but one way to increase your intake is to choose water over other beverage options.

Here are some ways to make sure you are adding more water to your daily routine:

Add Flavor
Adding lemon, lime, mint, fresh berries, or cucumber slices to water is a good way to switch it up so that you can be sure to get the ounces in!

Bathroom Break
Make a game of it, and have a glass of water whenever you take a bathroom break.

Drink Before You Eat
Having a glass of water between every meal helps with hydration, and can help to curb your appetite.

Use an App
Use a water tracking app to keep track of how many glasses your drink.

Eat Water-Rich Foods
Add water-packed foods to your diets, such as cucumber, celery, watermelon, and zucchini.
