What is Nigella Sativa – The Black Seed Oil and its Benefits?
Have you ever heard of the Nigella Sativa, which is related to the Cannabis Sativa but doesn’t have the THC that Cannabis has. Until a few months ago, I myself, did not know or ever heard of N.Sativa – Black Seed Oil. So I decided to do some research, and here is what I have found!

What is Black Seed Oil?
The black seed, also now as the black pepper , black caraway, black onion seeds or black cumin, comes from a small plant called Nigella Sativa. The flowers on the Nigella are a pale purple, blue or white in colour, are grown in the Eastern Europe, Western Asia and even in the Middle East.
The tiny black seeds of the Nigella Sativa have been used for thousands of years for home remedies, skin care, even in cookiing. beverages, baking and pickling. The seeds give flavour to curries, bread and pickles, same way as cumin or oregano.
The Black seed oil contains thymoquinone, which is an antioxidant and an anti-inflammatory compound that has been known/ believed to have tumor-reducing agents.
The black seed oil can be ingested by capsules, oils or applied to the skin. It also can be used in massage oils, shampoos, homemade skin-care and fragrances.

Benefits for Weight Loss – It has been proven, that black seed supplementation can with reduction of Body Mass (BMI). With many studies show that when taking Black Seed supplements, there were no side effects. Also has been shown that Black seed can help with the war on Obesity.

Black seed oil may also hydrate hair, soften skin, and act as a moisturizer, although there is a lack of scientific evidence to confirm these benefits.

Antibacterial Activity Studies show that the antibacterial effect of ground black seeds in a modified paper disc diffusion method, in which a clear inhibition of the growth of Staphyloccus aureus was observed by a concentration of 300 mg/ml with distilled water as the control. It was confirmed by using the positive control Azithromycin.
Sinus Issues Sinusitis is associated with inflammation and infections of the air filled cavities of sinuses. A study was aimed to evaluate the potential efficacy of Nigella sativa Blac Seed oil to help with managing the sinusitis.
The results of the studies on Nigella Sativa showed it has therapeutic potential in the treatment of sinusitis with its anti-inflammatory agents. With the use of Nigella Sativa seed oil can inhibit the inflammation of the sinuses and respiratory airways, microbial infections and ninally help the patients who are suffering from clinical symptoms of sinusitis such as corys\za, nasal congestion, headache, nec pain, earache, and toothache. Also future clinical studies will be required to evaluate its efficacy in patients with sinusitis in the future
Anti-Parasite Studies have been proven that the effects of the Black seed oil against the liver damage induced by Schistosoma mansoni infection in mice, reduced the number of S mansoni worms in the liver, and decreased the number of ova deposited in both the liver and the intestine.
Antioxidant The antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anticancer and antibacterial activities of the shoots, roots, and seeds methanol extracts from N. sativa were studied. The three organs exhibited strong antioxidant activity.
Antidiabetic Activity In a clinical study, showed the adjuvant effect of the Nigella Sativa on various clinical and biochemical parameters of the insulin resistance syndrom were investigated. It was found that Nigella Sativa to mb effective as an add-on therapy in patients of insulin resistance syndrome. Therefore Nigella Sativa has a significant activity in diabetic and dislipidemic patients..
Anticancer Activity The anticancer effects of Black seed oil was investigated on breast cancer cells, it was found that the TQ exerted strong anti-proliferative effects on the breast cancer cells and when TQ was combined with doxorubicin and 5-fluorourcil, cytotoxicity was proven to be increased. Nigella Sativa has been proven effective as traditional medicine for centuries. The crude oil and TQ extracted from its seeds and oil are against many diseases including cancer. Other diseases as well are cardiovascular complications, diabetes, asthma, kidney disease etc. The Nigella Sativa is effective against cancer in blood system, lung, kidney, liver, prostate, breast, cervix, skin with much safety. Although it is not clearly understood how the molecular mechanisms behind the anticancer role, some studies show that the TQ has antioxidant role and helps to repair the body defense system, induces apoptosis and controls Akt pathway. Even though for centuries, it has been used for the anticancer activity, the proper scientific research with this important traditional medicine is a history of last 2 to 3 decades. There has not been many research work and studies done with the importance of the Nigella Sativa. but in summary of a few articles I came across, it has been summarized the actions of TQ and crude oil of Nigella Sativa against different types of cancers can be effective in helping to fight against the toxic cancerous cells.
Anti-Inflammatory The aqueous extract of N. sativa was found to possess anti-inflammatory and analgesic. (Anti-inflammatory effect of seeds and callus of Nigella sativa L. extracts on mix glial cells with regard to their thymoquinone content.
Immunomodulatory The potential immunomodulatory effects of the Nigella Sativa (Black seed oil) were investigated of splenocyte proliferation (white blood cells), macrophage (large white blood cells) function, and NK anti-tumor activity. The results demonstrated the aqueous extract of Nigella Sativa significantly enhances, the white blood cells growth in a dose-responsive manner..
Cardiovascular Activity A benefit of the Nigella Sativa has been shown in the reduction of plaque formation, and improving cardiovascular activity.
Hair Loss This is a big bonus for men (and women) that there is a benefit of the black seed oil. It has been proven that it helps prevent hair loss. They often apply it but more commonly ingest the Black seed oil 2 to 3 times a day.
Gastro-Protective Black seed oil has been observed to help people with dyspepsia, which includes indigestion or heartburn. A study that examined 70 people suffering from dyspepsia discovered that 5 ml daily helped to reduce the discomfort from these symptoms as well reduced infection from the bacteria, H. pylori.

It was revealed that vitamin C and Nigella Sativa oil both had a rejeuvinating and healing effect as the lowered the serum creatinine, blood urea nitrogen and antioxidant activity as comparted to the group using the chemical antibiotic – general medicine controlled group.
Asthma There was a randomized, double-blind placebo-controlled trial that demonstrated Black Seed Oil supplementation improves asthma control with a trend in pulmonary function improvement. This was also associated with a remarkable normalization of blood eosinophilia (disease fighting white blood cells).
Neuropharmacoligical The aqueous and methanol extracts of defatted Nigella sativa (black seed oil) showed signs to possess a potent central nervous system and analgesic activities, especially depressant action in the case of the Antioxidant properties of methanolic extracts.
Anticonvulsant Research has shown that anticonvulsant and potent antioxidant effects of curcumin and black seed oil in reducing oxidative stress, the excitability and seizures inductions of epileptic animals, therefore improving some of the adverse effects of anti-epileptic drugs. As well, the neuroprotective activity of curcumin and Nigella Sativa oil against oxidative stress in has been proven to be most effective with calming epileptic animals as well as children.
There are some of us who are sceptical with the healing properties of the black seed oils, but with more research and development, hoping more and more will learn the value of the Nigella Sativa and its effects, rather activity with the inner body.

Potential Side Effects of Black Seed Oil As it has been proven that the Nigella Sativa – Black seed oil has many benefits to your health, it is not without its own side effects. Some people may develop mild allergies or skin rashes to the Nigella Sativa, however no real adverse effects have been reported. Pregnant women have been reported to have added the Black Seed oil to the regular daily supplements, but there is the side effects that high doses may affect the fetus as well the mother’s well being, as it may slow down or stop the uterus from contracting. So it is recommended that pregnant women use lower doses during pregnancy. Same with breast feeding to avoid use of the Black seed oil as there is not much information about the effects on yours or the child’s health.
In Summary In summary with the more I learn about the Nigella Sativa and will myself adding it to my daily regime, I understand the value of Nigella Sativa and finding it is just as effect as Cannabis Sativia but doesn’t have the THC. As well in researching, and reading up on the Nigella, I begin to understand more the benefits of the Black seed oil. I also hope that more people will begin to understand and realize the Health Benefits of Nigella Sativia. And also to realize that even though, Nigella Sativa is related to the Cannabis Sativa, it is not the same. This means realizing the lifesaving importance of daily food choices along with embracing a wise nutritional supplement plan to protect our health for the many years to come.
