Almost exactly 5 years ago, I was in Antwerp, Belgium, and was searching for a cup of hot cocoa. While walking through the outside markets, I found a delicate stand to get my warm cup of joy. Upon paying, they asked if I would like it spicy. I had never heard of spicy hot chocolate before […]

A Partridge in a Chocolate Truffle Tree!

A Partridge in a Chocolate Truffle Tree!

A Partridge in a Chocolate Truffle Tree

Makes a great gift for that someone special!

Makes a great gift for that someone special!  This is such a wonderful way of serving your chocolate truffles at Christmas or New Year – or indeed any special winter festival! I do make my own truffles for this, but you can buy ready-made truffles for ease and speed of course!  The joyful look on their faces, when they see it?  A Festive Gift, Indeed!

PREP 4 HRS
COOK 1 HR
Servings 12-18 (1 Chocolate Truffle Tree)

INGREDIENTS

1 kg good quality chocolate truffles or 1 kg marshmallows

For the Tree

1 (15 inch) foam balls

1 (10 -12 inch) length wood branches
15 -20 small white foam balls
1 plant pot
florist’s foam
aluminum foil
length ribbon
cocktail stick

DIRECTIONS

Spray the “trunk” of the tree with a colour of your choice such as gold or silver.
Spray the plant pot the same colour, allow them to dry for at least 4 hours.
Cover the foam ball with aluminium foil and wrap securely around, taping if necessary.
Place some pebbles in the bottom of the plant pot and then push the florist’s foam in, on top of the pebbles – wedging it in so that it is firm.
Stick the “trunk” into the foil-covered ball – firmly – then push the other end of the “trunk” into the florist’s foam in the prepared plant pot. Make sure it is firm and does not rock, add some more pebbles.
Tie a ribbon around the top of the “trunk” at the base of the foil-covered ball – then tie a large bow.
Take a cocktail stick and push it into your truffle, (or other sweets/candy) then push the other end into the foam ball making sure it is securely positioned.
Do this for all the chocolate truffles until the “tree” is full.
Add some white foam packing balls around the top of the plant pot to resemble snow – brush off any loose cocoa and serve with coffee!
Don’t forget to pin your Partridge nearby! My Partridge is a glass bird, that was a gift from Joyful Cook!

Non Food Cinnamon Ornaments

Non Food Cinnamon Ornaments

Not only for Christmas Tree but can use as Gift Tags, too!

These decorations are nice in the x-mas tree but also as gift-tags. Use a gold or silver craft pen to write names on them.

PREP 10 MINS

COOK 0 MINS

Servings (Yield) 10-14

INGREDIENTS

1 cup ground cinnamon
1 tablespoon ground cloves
3⁄4 cup applesauce
1 teaspoon fragrance oil (apple, cinnamon, range or your own choice)
2 tablespoons white craft glue

DIRECTIONS

Non Food Cinnamon Ornaments

Not only for Christmas Tree but can use as Gift Tags, too!

Mix in a bowl the cinnamon and cloves.

Add to this applesauce, oil and the glue.
Knead this mixture for a few minutes til you have a firm but pliable dough.
Too wet, add more cinnamon–too dry, add more applesauce.
Roll the dough out on a surface dusted with cinnamon, 1/4 inch thick.
Cut out shapes with cookie cutters [x-mas tree, hearts, stars, etc].
Make a hole in the top with a wooden or metal skewer, this must be large enough for ribbon if you want them for hanging.
Air dry them for several days on paper kitchen towel, turning them over several times so they don’t warp.Impatient?.
A low oven [200°F] for a few hours will also do the trick, don’t forget to turn them over.
When dry, decorate with a ribbon.
You can also use shallow plaster, cookie and candy molds, press the dough in the cavity, smooth with a rolling pin, ease out of the mold and cut away the excess dough.
Or roll out the dough, place a piece of decorative lace on the top, using the rolling pin go over it until it has left an impression of the lace, then cut out using the cookie cutters.
You also get a nice result using cookie stamps.

Christmas Scent

Christmas Scent

This makes an excellent gift. Make sure you make some for yourself too though because it really smells wonderful. Please note, you need to use whole cloves. Ground cloves are much stronger and will definitely overwhelm the other scents. If you aren’t a fan of cloves, feel free to leave them out entirely. I do sometimes.

INGREDIENTS
Christmas Scent2 -4tablespoons cloves(whole)
2 -4cinnamon sticks4bay leaves
1⁄2orange, sliced
1⁄2lemon, sliced
water
DIRECTIONS
Add orange and lemon slices to dry mixture of spices. Put in a small sauce pan with 4 cups of water. Simmer on low to release the fragrance. Or, you can simmer it in a mini (2 qt.) crock pot with the lid off for a safer alternative.IF you simmer it for a few hours, you will need to add more water occasionally so it doesn’t boil dry. Store in refrigerator when not in use, to prevent molding. It can be simmered over and over again! Always add more water to equal 4 cups before each use.

TO GIVE AS A GIFT:

put ingredients in a quart-sized decorative jar. Add enough water to fill jar. Add a few drops of red food coloring if desired. Close securely and give with a small gift tag explaining how to use it.
