Dear Friend,

Functional health is a much more personal approach to healthcare. It ensures that each patient is treated according to their specific needs and imbalances individually, rather than treated as a diagnosis.

Aiming to return the body and mind to optimum balance and functionality, functional healthcare can often prove the most preferable route for women to embark upon to solve their health issues.

Functional healthcare can help with things such as:

Chronic Fatigue
Migraine Headaches
Anxiety and Depression
Insomnia and Sleep Disorders
Digestive Issues
Obesity and Weight Management
Hormonal Imbalances
Menopause
PMS (Premenstrual Syndrome)
Fertility Problems
Postpartum Issues

How Does it Work?

By using all natural methods and personalized care, functional healthcare aims to enable patients to not only cure their ailments but get to the root cause of them as well. Whether it be herbal medicine, nutritional therapy, or stress management, functional medicine techniques can greatly reduce the severity of many health complications and by doing so help to prevent them from progressing further.

Becoming better aware of your health issues and their potential causes, triggers, and treatments is a part of how functional medicine helps you to heal yourself and STAY healed. Getting to know all aspects of your health issue and implementing positive change to avoid them worsening cultivates awareness both in your body and in your mind in order to achieve optimum health.

Boosting hormonal function is vital in overall physical and mental health, Estrogen, in particular, is associated with the proper functioning of the female reproductive system, among many other benefits.

Try these foods for healthy hormones:

Seeds: flax seeds and sesame seeds
Fruit: apricots, oranges, strawberries, and peaches
Vegetables: yams, carrots, alfalfa sprouts, kale, and celery
Soy products: tofu, miso soup, soy and yogurt
Dark rye bread
Legumes: lentils, peas, and pinto beans
Olives and olive oil
Chickpeas
Including these foods in your diet will help women lower their risk of developing hormonal imbalances!

Dear Friend,

When many of us think of gratitude, we associate it the act of simply saying “thank you” to someone for an act of kindness. However, gratitude is more than just a reaction or the feeling associated with feeling thankful for something.Instead, it is a positive emotion, and a deeper appreciation of someone or something. This deeper relationship with gratitude, of course, has a longer lasting effect.

Gratitude is a state of mind that we create when we affirm good in our lives that comes from outside of ourselves or from relishing in small pleasures. We all have those precious blessings in our lives that we are grateful for, but gratitude does not necessarily have to come from our own circumstances.

Practicing gratitude means developing an awareness that allows you to be grateful for things like good health, a delicious meal, a child’s smile, the air that you breathe. It is a deeper appreciation of life in all its moments. This includes negative experiences as well because by practicing gratitude, you become aware and grateful that there is always something to be learned. You choose what to be grateful for and when.

The benefits of practicing gratitude are plentiful. Here are some of them:

Wellbeing
Expressing your gratitude can improve your overall sense of wellbeing.

Relationships
Gratitude strengthens interpersonal relationships.

Optimism
A focus on gratitude can increase optimism by shifting your energy to more positive emotions.

Happiness
The pursuit of happiness is subjective, but the satisfaction that comes from practicing gratitude has a lasting positive effect. Therefore, the more we practice gratitude, the more positive we feel, thus the happier we are with our lives.

So. how do you enter into this state of mind?

Starting a gratitude journal is a wonderful way to get in touch with what makes you feel grateful.
To do this, get yourself a journal that is only going to be used for your gratitude journal. This is important because you want this journal to be filled with positive, happy experiences and emotions. It is good to be able to express all of your emotions, so maybe have a secondary journal for all other expressions.
The purpose of the journal is to reflect on your day or week to pull out at least five things you feel grateful for.

Before you begin your journaling, make sure you feel sincere about what you are about to write about, and try to focus your energies on both people and intangibles.
Besides highlighting the wonderful things you can be grateful for, this practice has been proven to increase sleep quality, decrease symptoms of sickness, and increase happiness and joy.
Enjoy the journey!

Dear Yoga Enthusiasts, ,

Sometimes the stress and obligations of life can mount up to a point where sleep doesn’t feel like a productive way to spend your time. We’ve all been there, tossing and turning, getting tangled in your covers as you try your best to wind down your mind and ease yourself to sleep. It’s a super frustrating thing to go through, but there IS a solution — yoga!

A great way to shake off the restlessness could be as simple as taking some time to focus on your breathing. This works to calm the parasympathetic nervous system and counteract the stress hormones that are coursing through your body. The addition of restorative poses to your practice is just the cherry on top of a recipe for a good night’s sleep!

All you need is 10 minutes to practice this quick bedtime flow…but you can take as long as you want!

Start in a seated position with your legs cross, then drape your arms in front of you and bend into a seated forward fold. Take a few deep breaths. This is great for opening up the hips and creating an overall sense of ease.

Slowly make your way to a standing position, then bend forward again for a standing forward fold. Bend the knees as much as you need to in order to feel a satisfying release..

Make your way to child’s pose. Massage the forehead against your mat by slowly shaking you head back and forth.

Take a seat with your legs in front of you, then rock your way back to plow pose. Take deep breaths and stay in this pose anywhere from 1-5 minutes.

Move toward a wall, lay on your back and lift your legs up vertically. Use the wall as support for your tush and the back of the legs, then spread your arms out to either side and relax. This pose has a soothing quality and is perfect for bedtime.

Twist it up to release any extra creaks and cracks that are still hiding inside you. Try either a seated spinal twist or a supine twist.

Lean back to reclined butterfly for a final hip opener. If you want, grab some blankets or pillows to place between your knees and the floor for some extra support.

Finally, turn your body on sleep mode by taking a few moments in Savasana. Focus on your breathing and try to picture the day’s stress melting away.

Dear Friend,

Did you know that most skincare products on the market are loaded with ingredients that are actually toxic to your skin and body?

It’s true. Artificial ingredients and chemicals are used to have a positive effect on the skin. However those positive effects are often temporary, yet the negative effects last long term because the toxic ingredients are absorbed by the skin and build up within the body.

Thankfully, there are many natural and inexpensive options out there, and most of them can be found in your pantry!

Below, are some skincare alternatives for healthy, beautiful skin. Just pick your skin type, and try adding these natural products to your beauty routine.

Oily Skin
Exfoliating- Equal parts sea salt and oil to create a natural scrub to brighten the skin. Gently apply in a circular motion, rinse with warm water, and pat dry.
Cleansing – Equal parts castor oil and olive oil. Massage in and wipe off with a warm cloth.
Toning – A tablespoon of apple cider vinegar in a cup of water kept cool in the refrigerator to splash on the face.
Moisturizing – May not be necessary for oily skin. But if needed, a thin coat of coconut oil will work great.

Normal/Combination Skin
Exfoliating – Equal parts sugar (white or brown) and olive oil. Gently apply in a circular motion, rinse with warm water and pat dry.
Cleansing – A mix of 1/4 castor oil and ¾ oil (olive or almond). Massage in and wipe off with a warm cloth.
Toning – A tablespoon of apple cider vinegar in a cup of water kept cool in the refrigerator to splash on the face.
Moisturizing – If needed, a thin coat of coconut oil will work great.

Dry Skin
Exfoliating – Often not necessary for this skin type, but lightly rubbing a dry washcloth in circular motions can work if needed.
Cleansing – A mix of teaspoon of castor oil in 1/4 cup of another oil like olive or almond). Massage in and wipe off with warm cloth.
Toning – A tablespoon of apple cider vinegar in a cup of water kept cool in the refrigerator to splash on the face.
Moisturizing – Plain, organic shea butter massaged into the face and neck.

Try this simple banana mask for glowing, soft, and toned skin:

-Mash up one ripe banana into a smooth paste
-Apply it to your face and neck.
-Let it set for 10 to 20 minutes
-Rinse it off with cold water.

You can also add a little plain yogurt or honey to this one for more acne prone skin.

Here are some other great, natural masks to try:

Dear Reader,

Imagine the feeling of waking after a good night’s sleep. You feel refreshed, energized, and positive. Now, think of a time where you woke up feeling the opposite. Throughout the day you may have had trouble concentrating, became frustrated easier, and had increased food cravings. Does that sound familiar?

While most people recognize that sleep is crucial for maintaining good health, most of us don’t know about the more individualized effects it has on the body, whether you are getting too much or too little. Surely you have felt tired from a night of restless sleep, but were you aware that tossing and turning actually decreases your immunity? Encourages weight gain? Affects your short-term and long-term memory? Surprising, isn’t it?

Quality sleep affects:
-The brain by increasing concentration and memory retention
-Mood by decreasing risk and prevalence of depression
-Disease risk by lowering chance for heart disease, stroke, and diabetes
-Immunity by strengthening immune function and decreasing risk of the common cold
-Athletic performance by improving speed, accuracy, and reaction times
-The body’s repair mechanism by lowering inflammation and repairing cellular damage

The benefits of a good night sleep are much more valuable than ANYTHING keeping you away from it. Put yourself first and set up a relaxing nightly routine catered to falling and staying to sleep.

I guarantee it will be life changing!

Essential oils are a very concentrated version of the natural oils found in plants, and they provide a host of health benefits. Try some of these essential oil blends either topically or in a diffuser to help you prep your body for the perfect night’s sleep!

Blend #1:
4 drops Lavender
3 drops Bergamot
2 drops Patchouli
2 drops Ylang Ylang

Blend #2:
3 drops Sandalwood
3 drops vetiver
3 drops Lavender
2 drops Chamomile

Yoga: at the Office?…

Dear Reader,

Sitting at a desk for 8 hours a day places SO much strain on the lumbar spine and contributes to neck, shoulder, and lower back pain. Dealing with pain while at work is especially difficult because it can make you feet irritated, distracted and generally in a bad mood This is what I want to help you avoid!

While I can’t do anything about helping you find a job where you don’t have to sit at a desk and answer emails all day (sorry), what I CAN do is offer you some solutions to integrating yoga practice at work.

The major areas that we’re going to want to focus on are the back, fingers, wrists, hips, and shoulders. Once you start practicing these while on the job, you’ll be surprised how much tension you hold — and how much tension can be released!

One of the best tension-relieving stretches is the good old fashioned forward fold. With a slight bend in your knees (or a big bend), let yourself fold forward at the hip joint and relax EVERYTHING. Stay here for at least a minute and just hang. Take deep breaths and with each one picture yourself letting go a little bit more.

Taking the time to decompress and allow some new blood flow is sure to get you back on track and ready to tackle your next project or meeting!

Your Liver- Your Skin – Your Body!

One of the ladies from my VALENTUS company shared this piece of information, I thought I would pass along to you…

Well ladies, are you open to expanding your mind on what is going on in the physical body when skin conditions appear? My research has led me to uncover Anthony William’s work. He explains that an overburdened liver is the cause of eczema, psoriasis, acne and other skin conditions. The skin is the largest cleansing organ of the body. When rashes appear, it is a sure thing that there is some stress happening with internal organs.

The liver plays a HUGE role in keeping our physical bodies free of the myriad of toxins that are constantly being absorbed into the body, from environmental sources, food sources, water, pharmaceuticals, alcohol, cigarettes…the list is long. The liver’s job is to clean all of these out of the bloodstream, sending clean blood up to the heart. When the liver becomes overburdened, it ends up doing its best to send the toxins out through the kidneys, intestines and skin. When a rash appears, something is definately going on with the liver.

How do you relieve the liver?

ONE: Eliminate all dairy and eggs, as these foods feed viruses and bacteria present in the body, through their fat and hormone content. As the viruses and bacteria feed off the fat and hormones, they release a toxic waste called a dermatoxins, that is like poison to the physical body and causes inflammation and irritation.

TWO: Reduce your meat consumption to once a day. Meat is fat. The liver must clean all this fat out of the bloodstream. When 3 meals a day, 365 days a year, of meat, dairy and eggs keeps coming at the liver, it cannot keep up. (If you have had your gallbladder removed, it is essential that you seriously reduce your fat intake, as the gallbladder holds the bile made by the liver to digest fatty foods. No vessel, no bile, no digestion of fats. Not a good situation). As this barrage of fat and protein continues, the stomach sends its reserves of hydrochloric acid to help the liver digest the fatty foods. This ends up burning out the stomach, lowering the hydrochloric acid levels, causing acid reflux and digestive discomfort. This is further exacerbated by the stomach’s inability to digest the heavy intake of protein, resulting in this food sitting at the bottom of the stomach, rotting.

The high intake of fat from meat, dairy and eggs overburdens the liver, interfering with its ability to clean the blood. When there is a high content of fat in the bloodstream, it chokes out available oxygen, causing acidic conditions. Cancer thrives in acidic conditions and cannot thrive in conditions that are alkaline and oxygenated. The over 70 trillion cells that make up our body need nutrients and oxygen, not fat. Fat also blocks the insulin receptors, causing diabetic conditions.

THREE: Increase your consumption of fruits and vegetables. There are very few fruits or vegetables on the planet that are designed to hurt us. These foods are the Elixir of Health for the physical body and are readily digested and utilized for their high content of vitamins and minerals. If you eat any fruit and vegetable and it causes discomfort, it is getting caught up in the rotting protein at the bottom of your stomach, or running into backed up waste in the intestines. Fruit and vegetables are also the perfect carbohydrate to balance out the blood sugar, feed the brain and muscles and keep the storage reserve of glucose in the liver. The liver keeps this storage of glucose to protect the pancreas, should we not eat for hours. Fasting is very hard on the pancreas. A low-carb diet is literally starving your physical body of necessary glucose to run the body well. Fruits and vegetables are also natural blood thinners.

FOUR: Consider juicing celery. Yes, celery, one of the most underrated vegetables out there. Drinking 16 oz of celery juice every morning provides the physical body with a host of benefits. It is the perfect solution for resetting the hydrochloric acid in your stomach. Acid reflux is caused by not enough stomach acid. If you take an antacid tablet and further suppress your hydrochloric acid, you are in for a world of digestive hurt! Celery juice will help this situation immensely. It also calms and reverses inflammation in the body, relieving many chronic illnesses. It contains a multitude of mineral salts that act together as an antiseptic, breaking down the pathogen’s cell membranes and destroying them. These mineral salts keep your kidneys and adrenals functioning and raise your gut’s hydrochloric acid, balances your pH as well as cleanses and repairs your stomach, digestive tract and your liver! These salts are an important support for the central nervous system and extremely healing for depression, brain fog, anxiety, confusion, bipolar disorder and more. The list of benefits from drinking celery juice is breathtaking!

WHERE TO START?
Be Aware. Understand that a high fat, high protein, low carb diet is causing much distress in the physical body, especially on the liver. All of the organs work to protect each other. Our body does not attack itself! It is UNDER attack from the host of chemicals in our air, water, food, pharmaceuticals, laundry detergent, air fresheners, cosmetics…there are hundreds of troublemakers for the liver. Start by drinking 16 oz of celery juice every morning. Pay attention to how much fat you are ingesting in a day and work to lower it. Cut WAY back on dairy and eggs, with the intent to eliminate them. Eat more fruits and vegetables…with no fear!

The SlimRoast Optimum Coffee is also a great tool for taking pressure off of the liver. This coffee nourishes the dopamine reward centers in your brain and gut with a nootropic stack of nutrients and supplements that help to crush your cravings, effectively giving you back control of what goes in your mouth. And the VASO6 patented ingredient helps to increase the blood flow throughout your body, efficiently transporting the red blood cells carrying nutrients and oxygen to all the cells in your body.

Pair the Optimum Coffee with the Prevail Max spray and you create a clean, healthy blood flow. All blood is cleaned through the liver before being transported up to the heart. The cleaner the blood, the less stress on the liver.

This information is presented here to help you think outside of the box. We are already doing that with the Valentus lineup of amazing products. Modern medicine has its place. However, when it comes to chronic illnesses or unexplained symptoms like skin conditions, they cannot fix it with a pill. It MUST come from our food sources. That is how the body is made, to survive on good nutrition, clean air, deep breathing, laughter and lots of sunshine. We have lost touch with the real medicine in our world. Cheers! Laurie Leigh

Ten Keto Tips for Healthy Weight Loss! | Katharine | KJensifyme Healthy
Getting into (and staying in) Ketosis… Many of you are getting into the Keto Plan but not sure how it works. There are many books out there as well online sites that can help answer any questions. But have to remember to do it right in order for it to work. Here are some tips that was past along to me to help get into Ketosis…

1. Eat Less Protein
Most average ladies need about 50-100 grams, no more, FYI. (35-50 grams if you are unable to exercise) You have to self-experiment a little to find what is right for you. The idea is that protein can turn to sugar if someone eats more than they need, then the sugar spikes blood glucose encouraging fat storage.

2. Eat More Fat
I used to see this all the time in clients, I say add more fat and people add a tsp of avocado to their salad, NO!!! I am talking about seeing fat as a food group not a side item. Avocado’s, egg yolks, homemade mayo, homemade dressing, Hollandaise, olives, grass fed butter on vegetables and meat are all good examples. When you are in ketosis, fat will need to be 60-75% of your calories.

3. Get Ketostix (strips or a meter)
Get ketone urinalysis strips or a ketone blood meter. The urine testing strips are not as accurate but keep you motivated and serve as a guide to what may “knock you out” of ketosis. The blood meter is better for the “need to know technical-folk”. Ketones will be higher at night, by the way.

4. Cut the Carbs
Usually, people do not get into ketosis unless they eat between 30-50 net carbs and Dr. Westman from Duke recommended a stricter 20 total carbs for people with severe insulin resistance. Some people may be able to get away with more but when in doubt stick with salad, zucchini, broccoli, cauliflower and maybe some berries, for your carbs. And don’t forget to cover them in butter, heavy cream or coconut milk.

5. Portion Distortion
Don’t freak out, but when your portions get too big you will most likely exceed protein requirements. But the great thing about ketosis is there is a natural reduction in hunger…. for real, it is true!! Don’t fret! Play around with your food amounts, but I have seen women lose weight more easily with a range 1500 to 2500 calories. (Depending on exercise of course)

6. Eat More Intuitively
When we chomp down a side of beef we probably don’t even digest it because our portions are so big and hard to assimilate. Try to eat slowly and chew (20 times each bite). Try to sit down and pay attention to the flavor of the food. Try to listen to that inner voice that is always sending us faint messages that we are satisfied. That little voice gets louder the more we try to hear it! When you chew each bite well it lets your stomach know to produce acid so that you will get the most nutrition out of each bite. You do not want your beautiful organic grass-fed steak going to waste… right?

7. Chillax
Part of losing weight is about balancing hormones including cortisol, leptin and ghrelin. These hormones are smarter than you and you can’t trick them no matter how much you want to finish that midnight movie or late-night project. If these hormones are out of whack they will rule the day and there will be no way you will be able stick to your keto plan. Cortisol promotes belly fat storage, and leptin/grehlin imbalances will cause you to overeat so get your ZZZZZZ’s!! Sleep in a very dark room and get 7-9 hours each night.
Also find a way to manage stress that fits your lifestyle (or change your lifestyle, if you don’t think you have time). I take daily walks and add in hot baths when I really need the extra peace.

8. Visualize
It is important to change your negative thoughts about your body. Spend a few minutes each day visualizing the body you want. Picture yourself at a time when you felt great and looked good. Seeing yourself this way will help imprint that message in your brain. I am not sure why it works but it really does work so give it a shot!

9. Prepare
Meal planning and even prepping ahead can be the key to success for many. When we know what’s on the menu we are way more likely to eat from it. Take your lunch to work and always bring a keto-friendly dish to a gathering. (This way…you will at least have one dish you can eat from)!

10. Give it Time

It takes a consistent two or three weeks of high fat and low carb eating to get into the keto zone. Don’t do it for a few days and say it doesn’t work … be patient.

Pepsi admits its soda contains cancer-causing ingredients

By Natural News
When the Center for Environmental Health released test results showing that Pepsi intentionally covered up the presence of high levels of 4-Mel in its popular soft drinks in 2013, the company denied both the presence of this chemical in its beverages and the fact that it was dangerous. 4-Mel, which is short for 4-Methylimidazole, is a compound that is formed in the manufacturing of caramel coloring, and is a known carcinogen.
Since then, the drinks maker has fought against complying with California state requirements to place a cancer warning label on the beverages that contain the ingredient, which include not only Pepsi, but also Diet Pepsi and Pepsi One.

Settlement in class action lawsuit

Now, a settlement in a class action lawsuit against Pepsi has gained preliminary approval from a federal judge in California. As part of the proposed settlement, Pepsi has agreed to ensure its caramel coloring’s 4-Mel levels do not exceed 100 parts per billion in products that are being shipped for sale within the U.S. They will also be required to test the soda using specific protocols.
The soft drink giant also agreed to these measures in a different lawsuit that was settled in a California state court last year. The new settlement, however, expands the reach of these measures from California to the entire country.

Pepsi failed to warn consumers that its drinks contain known carcinogens

The lawsuit accused Pepsi of failing to warn people that its beverages contain 4-Mel, which California has officially recognized as a cancer-causing chemical.
2014 Consumer Reports test showed that the 4-Mel in Pepsi exceeded the permitted level of 29 micrograms per bottle or can, which would mean that they were in violation of common law and consumer protection statutes in the state of California.

Violates Prop 65 in California

In particular, this violates California’s Proposition 65, which has been in place since 1985, and requires manufacturers to provide consumers with clear warnings when their products will expose them to toxic or cancer-causing chemicals.
The state’s Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment set the cutoff at 29 micrograms because that level creates a risk of cancer of one in 100,000.
Citing a 2013 Mintel and Leatherhead Food Research report, Consumer Reports said that caramel coloring is the world’s most widely used food coloring. At the time, Pepsi tried to say that because Prop 65 refers to exposure per day rather than exposure per can, and that the average amount of diet soda that its drinkers consume daily is less than a can, there was no need to place a warning on it. Consumer Reports disagreed, however.
“No matter how much consumers drink they don’t expect their beverages to have a potential carcinogenin them. And we don’t think 4-MeI should be in foods at all. Our tests of Coke samples show that it is possible to get to much lower levels,” toxicologist Dr. Urvashi Rangan said.

Is drinking soda really worth risking cancer and obesity?

It simply does not make sense for people to expose themselves unnecessarily to an ingredient that merely serves to color their food, and consumers have the right to be aware of what they are putting in their bodies. The popularity of books like Food Forensics serves to illustrate the growing desire by Americans to know what ingredients their food products contain.
The cancer-causing caramel coloring in Pepsi is not the only reason consumers should steer clear of it. Soft drinks are also believed to be behind the nation’s obesity epidemic.
UCLA study found that adults who consumed one sugary drink such as a soda every day had a 27 percent higher likelihood of being classified as overweight than those who did not drink such beverages. Moreover, drinking just one soda each day adds up to a total of 39 pounds of sugar each year! That means that regular soda drinkers can cut their risk of obesity and cancer in one fell swoop simply by giving up the habit for good.
