Dear Friends,

We don’t need statistics to know that cancer is a huge epidemic in our world today. The treatment methods we have become accustomed to unfortunately developing into household names. For example, the term “chemotherapy” is now recognized as a buzzword for fear, trauma, and excruciating recovery periods that we wouldn’t wish on our worst enemy.

This leaves little exposure to the world of functional or natural cancer treatments. The idea that a disease so deadly and consuming could be cured or prevented by natural means is often questioned. We have become accustomed to fighting fire with fire as a way to approach these pressing health problems and as such, the seemingly passive approaches of functional healthcare seems to be all too painless to be believed. Fortunately, many professionals are beginning to shift their perspective and realize that functional medicine may be the more productive route of treatment.

How Can Functional Medicine Help?

So often today medical professionals have treated the symptoms of cancer with an equal aggression as the aggression with which it attacks the cells. The cellular nature of cancer makes it difficult to imagine how to possibly predict the onset of it and even more difficult to remove from the body. Addressing the root cause of the illness is how functional medicine seeks to treat issues such as this. In the case of cancer specifically, this means creating a healthy base within the body to ensure the development of imbalances at the cellular level is avoided.

The imbalances that lie at the root of cancer formation are what functional medicine seeks to prevent – by enhancing immune function, ensuring optimum balance within the body is obtained, and making sure that things such as nutrition, physical activity, and environmental factors are all at their highest level of functional capacity. In short – the functional approach is creating the healthiest manifestation of the human body as possible.

As a functional health expert, Dr. Mark Hyman, states of functional cancer medicine:

“We can enhance immune function and surveillance through dietary and lifestyle changes, as well as nutrient and phytonutrient therapies. We can facilitate our body’s own detoxification system to promote the elimination of carcinogenic compounds. We can improve hormone metabolism and reduce the carcinogenic effects of too much insulin….from our high sugar and refined carbohydrate diet.”

Ultimately, functional medicine aims at preventing the onset of cancer cell-growth within the body. There are also certain actions that can be taken to decrease the rate of cancer-cell growth in those currently suffering from the disease.. These include:

Improving gut health
Cutting out sugar
Eliminating food sensitivities
Reducing inflammation
Decreasing toxic exposure
Changing immune system by the thought-process awareness
As each patient’s case will differ, functional health understands that generating awareness to your own stressors and particular needs is key to successfully removing and reducing the likelihood of developing symptoms altogether.

This video outlines some of the system imbalances that may cause cancer to develop:

Additionally, you can immediately implement some cancer preventing habits by including some of the following foods in your regular diet:

Leafy Green Vegetables
Cruciferous Vegetables
Berries
Orange Fruits and Veggies (Citrus Fruits, Squash, Sweet Potatoes, etc.)
Fresh Herbs and Spices
Organic Meats
Cultured Dairy Products
Nuts and Seeds

Hello Friends,

Welcome to a sample email of my ongoing Mental Health email series. If you or someone you know suffers from depression, anxiety or any other mental health issues, here is where you can get some informational tips and understanding of how to cope. Signup here https://kjensifyme.synduit.com/MENN0001.

Psychotherapy approaches are many and varied. Some types are rooted in years of research, while others are relatively new and rely mostly on anecdotal evidence. Today I’ll be focusing on giving you an overview of some of the most popular types of therapy.

Art Therapy:

A less conventional type of therapy, art therapy involves the use of creative techniques such as drawing, painting, coloring, sculpting, or collage to help people express their feelings in a way that creates a tangible product that can be analyzed and decoded to examine psychological and emotional undertones. Art therapy is thought to help people better understand suppressed feelings. The underlying theory about art therapy is that because art is a unique creation, each person brings their own memories, emotions, and thoughts to their work. Analyzing said work is then a way to interpret the person.

During a session, an individual will work with a professional trained in psychotherapy and visual arts at an accredited educational institution. The individual will create some form of artwork either in or out of the therapist’s office and then, upon finishing, patient and professional will talk about the creative process, together.

Animal-Assisted Therapy:

It has been proven in many studies that animals can provide a sense of calm, comfort, or safety and divert attention away from a stressful situation people struggling with mental health. Advocates of animal-assisted therapy say that developing a bond with an animal can help people develop a better sense of self-worth, emotional stability, and socialization skills. Animals, of course, can also help provide a sense of companionship to people with autism, medical issues, depression, or other mental illnesses that might cause isolation.

Group Therapy:

For some people, meeting one-on-one with a therapist can be intimidating or uncomfortable. In group therapy, a small group of people with similar issues will meet regularly to discuss life and individual problems. Meeting in a group setting provides a sense of camaraderie while creating a support system. Perhaps the most commonly known type of group therapy is Alcoholics Anonymous, where individuals share struggles with alcohol abuse in a safe setting.

Mindfulness:

Rather new in the Western world, mindfulness therapy works to makeover every aspect of life to train the body and mind to live more “in the moment.” The goal of mindfulness is to focus less on reacting to something or someone and more on observing and accepting without judgment. It teaches you to be aware of your thoughts and feelings to accept them — instead of attaching and reacting to them. In essence, there is a significant focus on reflection. Often, mindfulness is approached as a lifestyle that incorporates “clean eating,” meditation, and sometimes yoga, in an effort to lower stress levels and ease pain, anxiety, depression and overall suffering.

Psychoanalytic Therapy:

Perhaps the most popular and well-known form of therapy, psychoanalytic is a type of in-depth talk therapy that aims to bring unconscious, repressed, or deeply buried thoughts and feelings to the surface through discussions about early formative experiences. Working together, the therapist and client unpack how these repressed early memories have affected the client’s thinking, behavior, and relationships in adulthood. Therapists who perform this type of therapy have studied the theories of Sigmund Freud, and analyze the patient in the same way that Freud would have. Standard practices include dream analysis, word association, and exploration of childhood trauma.

If you’ve never made an appointment to visit with a professional therapist before, you might be a bit hesitant. You might be thinking, ‘that’s what friends are for! I have plenty of people to talk to, and I don’t need to find a professional.’ But your friends likely aren’t trained to deal with your specialized array of needs and emotions. Furthermore, they can’t provide the type of non-judgmental, non-attached advice and listening skills that a professional can.

Take a moment and visit Psychology Today’s therapist finder. Do a little digging and see if you might want to make an appointment with someone in your community. Most likely, your insurance covers at least a portion of your visits, and it can be tremendously helpful to meet with someone, even just once.

The Health Benefits of Drinking Tea!

Tea is one of the most widely consumed beverages in the world, and it’s no surprise people have been drinking tea for centuries for the pleasure, routine, taste, and for the many health benefits.

Also, tea has a high concentration of antioxidants, which may contribute to the prevention of cancer, osteoporosis, and cardiovascular diseases.

Here are some of the characteristics and healing properties of the major tea families:

Black Tea
This tea is more oxidized than other teas, which gives it a darker color, and a stronger flavor profile.
Health Benefits of Black Tea:
-aids the digestive system
-anti-inflammatory effects on the body
-protects the skin
-burns calories

Green Tea
This tea has not been processed as much as other forms, and so it has a gentler color and flavor profile.

Health Benefits of Green Tea:
-protects against cancer
-maintains heart health
-increases fat burning

Oolong Tea
This tea is made by a process of withering the leaves and drying them in the sun. This creates a light colored tea with a mild flavor profile.
Health Benefits of Oolong Tea:
-manages diabetes
-protects your teeth

White Tea
This tea is not oxidized or rolled, and this creates a mild flavor profile.
Health Benefits of White Tea:
-supports mental health
-fights bacteria

Herbal Tea
This tea is comprised of the dried properties of petals, leaves, seeds, roots, stems, and petals of a multitude of plants and flowers.

Health Benefits of Herbal Tea:
-aids in digestion
-relieves anxiety and stress
-helps with sleep
-provides anti-inflammatory properties

With all of the benefits of drinking tea, choosing a tea for your specific needs is a great way to discover what is out there, because with over 1500 varieties, finding one that fits your ideal flavor profile can be a little overwhelming.

Here are a few common symptoms that many of us experience, and a tea blend that can help:

Stress Blend
-chamomile
-lavender
-passionflower

Fatigue Blend
-mint
-nettles
-ginseng
-licorice root

Exhaustion Blend
-chamomile
-nettles
-licorice root
-lavender
-ashwagandha Root
-clove

How to Drink Your Tea
-Bring a kettle of water to a boil
-Add 2-3 tablespoons of tea to an infuser or tea bag and add to your water
-Cover and steep for 5-7 minutes
-Uncover and remove the bag or infuser.
-Enjoy your tea!

Say NO to GMOs!

GMOs, or genetically modified organisms, are plants that have been altered with the aim of becoming more appealing to a mass consumer population. This direct manipulation of an organism’s DNA in scientific laboratories has led to the presence of many unwanted and dangerous toxins in much of our food supply, such as fruits and vegetables genetically engineered to grow to several times larger than their natural size.

Needless to say, this fabricated image of health and nourishment has had a drastic effect on the wellbeing of the consumers. Unknownst to many, these GMOs have found their way into so many products that it is difficult to imagine how so little is known about them.

Okay, please sit down because GMOs are nearly everywhere!

Many well-known GMO-containing products include:

Corn
Soy
Sugar
Aspartame
Papayas
Canola
Cotton
Dairy
It’s worth checking out the brand of product you’re purchasing beforehand to check what they contain, but fortunately, functional medicine can help you even if you’ve already consumed these products.

Health risks of common GMOs include:

Increased susceptibility to allergies
Antibiotic resistance
Lowered nutritional value of foods
Inflammation
Ensuring a higher level of non-GMO and organic foods in your diet is a key functional health method to encourage your body to heal from the damage caused by GMOs. As with anything, this kind of healing takes time. It is important to think of this as part of a long-term plan to regain overall health and vitality, rather than a quick fix solution.

One simple action you can take to reduce the effects of GMOs seems simple, and it is – stops BUYING THEM!

This is easier said than done, however, as many GMOs sneak into our kitchens under the guise of foods we’d regularly consider as ‘healthy’ and some even labeled as ‘natural products’. So we suggest your action can simply be to become more aware.

Here are some facts about common GMOs:

  • Up to 90% of soybeans have been genetically modified to be naturally resistant to herbicides which farmers use to kill the weeds surrounding the beans. Not only does this create a GMO, but it creates a product FULL of chemicals.
  • Canola oil is derived from rapeseed oil and is considered one of the most chemically altered oils available.

  • One-fifth of the dairy cows in the United States have been given growth hormones to help them grow faster and increase their yield. These hormones can be found in the milk produced by these cows. It’s also been proven that these growth hormones have negative effects on the human body.

Many other products like corn, sugar beets, yellow squash, zucchini, and papaya are also pumped full of chemicals to increase their resistance to herbicides in agriculture. Until a solution has been found whereby farmers either discontinue the use of these chemicals or find another more natural way of protecting crops, it’s likely that GMO creation will continue.

Dear Friends,
Don’t just heal it.. Solve it.
There are 100 million Americans today suffering from some form of chronic pain. Yes, you read that right – 100 million! That’s one in ten people in America who have experienced daily pain for 3 months or more and a staggering 1.5 BILLION people worldwide who are dealing with chronic pain consistently!
The most common forms of chronic pain are:
  • Lower back pain
  • Neck pain
  • Facial Pain
  • Migraines
These pains can be caused by a variety of issues, including past injuries, muscle strains, underlying illnesses, and more. However, one of THE largest contributing factors to chronic pain that doctors rarely address is simply LIFESTYLE. Things as seemingly harmless as working in a static environment, such as sitting at a desk for long periods at a time, working in poorly lit rooms, and living each day with minimal movement and poor nutritional choices. These together all create a recipe for chronic pain and further health complications.
These are only a few examples of how lifestyle factors can contribute to chronic pain. One important thing that functional medicine highlights is that this pain does not need to a forever issue. It can be prevented, lessened, and even reversed!

How Can Functional Medicine Help Chronic Pain?
By getting to the root source, that’s how.
Learning about your pain – where it comes from, what it’s caused by, and how to prevent it – is the solution to addressing chronic pain. Functional health professionals work with you as partners in your health in order to implement a personalized course of action to help alleviate your chronic pain. Instead of simply muting the symptoms and physical manifestation of the pain, functional medicine seeks to get to the bottom of your discomfort. With the goal of solving the cause of the pain, patients can expect to receive not just short-term relief from their discomfort, but also insights on how to prevent further progression of the problem or onset of others later in life.
For many instances of chronic pain, there are underlying causes which might not be initially obvious to the patient. Things such as allergens, environmental toxins, an inflammatory diet, stress, and activity habits can contribute to pain and its lasting effects, so it’s worth becoming aware of (or ‘literate’ as the functional health world labels it) what could be affecting your pain.
Our hope is to enable all patients to become more ‘literate’ and confident in functional health, so as to maximize their chances of preventing the onset or reversing the effects of chronic pain.
While there’s no ‘one size fits all’ diet plan that will work for all chronic pain sufferers, there has been significant scientific evidence to suggest that following vegan, anti-inflammatory, and paleo diets have resulted in an overall decrease in pain.
These diets help promote the healthy functioning of cellular growth and repair, minimizing the instances of the excess inflammation.
Some foods to include in your diet to lower inflammation include:
  • Tomatoes
  • Olive Oil
  • Leafy greens (such as spinach and kale)
  • Almonds
  • Walnuts
  • Salmon
  • Pineapple
  • Blueberries
  • Strawberries
  • Citrus fruits
  • Pineapple
  • Turmeric
  • Ginger
Pro Tip: Juicing turmeric, ginger, and pineapple together will give you a fantastic tasting anti-inflammatory drink that you can enjoy at any time of the day!

We are motivated to educate as many people as possible which is why we host many events at our office. From in-person educational experiences to virtual webinars and even parties to celebrate our patients, we encourage everyone to get involved with all of our offerings. Hit the Ground Running

Fellow Want to be Runners,

Have you ever passed by a runner and thought, “I’d like to try that, but it looks way too hard?” It’s true, running is not the easiest sport to get into in terms of getting comfortable with your breath and your gait, but it is one of the best whole body exercises out there, and it’s highly accessible since all you need is a pair of shoes.

It’s true, running is not for everyone, but if you are someone curious about it, and you don’t know where to start, here is a step-by-step guide to getting you out there making strides:

Shoes
We might as well start with the shoes because a quality pair of shoes is the most important equipment to have. Your best bet is to visit a store that specializes in running as they can help you pick out a pair of shoes based on the shape of your foot and your gait. It is essential that you do get a pair of shoes that is going to serve you well. That old pair of walking shoes your aunt’s uncle’s sister gave you 10 years ago may not be the best bet when it comes to the support and cushioning you need for a run.

Clothes
While running, specific clothes are going to be the best option. You can, of course, run in whatever makes you feel the most comfortable. If that is a pair of shorts your aunt’s uncle’s sister gave you, fine, as long as you feel like they are something you could move and sweat in comfortably.

To get started running, you may find that you end up spending more time walking than running, and this is okay! The idea is to work up to it.

First, start by choosing a place to run.

Maybe that’s at the gym on a treadmill or maybe outside in your neighborhood. If you do choose to run outside, try to find a spot paved with asphalt or a dirt trail over concrete, as it is much harder on your body.

For your exercise, consider this plan to get you started:
-Begin with a brisk 10-minute walk to warm up.
-Move into a light jog for as long as you can (this is an easy pace – you should still be able to talk).
-Slow down and walk for a few minutes to let your body recover.
-Repeat that step, alternating jogging and walking for 10-20 minutes, depending on how you feel.
-Increase the amount you run by 10% each week while decreasing the amount you walk.

Work your way up to 30 minutes or more of continuous running about 3 times a week.

Dear Yoga Newbies,

Walking into your first yoga class can be an intimidating prospect. You might feel like an outsider entering into a club, but yoga is for anyone interested. When you are considering your first class, just know that chances are you are not the only first-timer, and everyone in the class you are attending was at one time experiencing their first class as well.

Yoga is a very old practice and there are definitely some guidelines and expectations of those practicing. Knowing a few things before you attend a class is helpful, and it may even soothe some of that anxiety.

Here are some things to know before you go:

You Don’t Need to be Flexible
You heard that right. Many people stay away from trying yoga because they feel that they are not flexible enough. But that is exactly why you should give yoga a try. You learn in the class how to stretch your body in ways that are safe and effective.

Sanskrit
In most yoga practices, it is tradition to use Sanskrit, the universal language of yoga, to identify each pose. But fret not, you do not need to know Sanskrit to practice yoga. Instructors will most often call out both the Sanskrit and English name for each pose.

No Eating Before Class
You will not be asked when you had your last meal when you attend a class, but it is advised that you do not eat prior to class because a full stomach does not mix well with physical activity. The general rule is nothing too substantial for 60-90 minutes before practice.

No Shoes or Socks
Of course, you are fine to wear your shoes to yoga, but most studios will have cubbies, lockers, or a designated spot for leaving your shoes and socks before entering into the yoga studio.

Mats/Towels
Most studios have mats and towels to rent or use, and this may be the way to go for your first few classes to make sure yoga is right for you before you invest in your own.

Fitted Clothes
You want to wear something fitted that has the ability to stretch as you move through your practice. There is no standard outfit, but you do not want to wear something that is too loose that will end up slipping up as you move through your poses.

Bring Water
Always bring a water bottle that has a lid that can close tightly. Most yoga studios will allow yogis to bring their closed beverages into the class to hydrate throughout the practice.

All Classes Are Different
There are many different styles of yoga. Some classes hold poses while others practice more continuous flow movements, and some instructors offer more fast-paced classes, while others are slower and more meditative. Some classes are even heated, so be sure to ask questions before deciding on what class is best for you. Many studios offer an introductory class, which is a great way to learn some basic postures.

One very common pose that you’ve maybe even heard of is Downward Facing Dog. It is used in most yoga practices, so it is a good one to know.

Maybe give this one a try before class! Downward Dog stretches and strengthens the entire body.

How to do it:
-Come onto all fours with your wrists under your shoulders and knees under your hips.
-Tuck under your toes and lift your hips up off the floor as you draw them up at back towards your heels.
-Keep your knees slightly bent if your hamstrings are tight, otherwise try and straighten out your legs while keeping your hips back and heels reaching towards your mat.
-Walk your hands forward to give yourself more length if you need to.
-Press firmly through your palms and rotate the inner elbows towards each other.
-Hollow out the abdominals and keep engaging your legs to keep the torso moving back towards the thighs.
-Hold for 5-8 breaths before dropping back to hands and knees to rest.

Dear Friends,

Did you know that most skincare products on the market are loaded with ingredients that are actually toxic to your skin and body?

It’s true. Artificial ingredients and chemicals are used to have a positive effect on the skin. However those positive effects are often temporary, yet the negative effects last long term because the toxic ingredients are absorbed by the skin and build up within the body.

Thankfully, there are many natural and inexpensive options out there, and most of them can be found in your pantry!

Below, are some skincare alternatives for healthy, beautiful skin. Just pick your skin type, and try adding these natural products to your beauty routine.

Oily Skin
Exfoliating- Equal parts sea salt and oil to create a natural scrub to brighten the skin. Gently apply in a circular motion, rinse with warm water, and pat dry.
Cleansing – Equal parts castor oil and olive oil. Massage in and wipe off with a warm cloth.
Toning – A tablespoon of apple cider vinegar in a cup of water kept cool in the refrigerator to splash on the face.
Moisturizing – May not be necessary for oily skin. But if needed, a thin coat of coconut oil will work great.

Normal/Combination Skin
Exfoliating – Equal parts sugar (white or brown) and olive oil. Gently apply in a circular motion, rinse with warm water and pat dry.
Cleansing – A mix of 1/4 castor oil and ¾ oil (olive or almond). Massage in and wipe off with a warm cloth.
Toning – A tablespoon of apple cider vinegar in a cup of water kept cool in the refrigerator to splash on the face.
Moisturizing – If needed, a thin coat of coconut oil will work great.

Dry Skin
Exfoliating – Often not necessary for this skin type, but lightly rubbing a dry washcloth in circular motions can work if needed.
Cleansing – A mix of teaspoon of castor oil in 1/4 cup of another oil like olive or almond). Massage in and wipe off with warm cloth.
Toning – A tablespoon of apple cider vinegar in a cup of water kept cool in the refrigerator to splash on the face.
Moisturizing – Plain, organic shea butter massaged into the face and neck.

Try this simple banana mask for glowing, soft, and toned skin:

-Mash up one ripe banana into a smooth paste
-Apply it to your face and neck.
-Let it set for 10 to 20 minutes
-Rinse it off with cold water.

You can also add a little plain yogurt or honey to this one for more acne prone skin.

Here are some other great, natural masks to try:

Dear Friends,

Were you aware that the average American consumes about 152 pounds of sugar a year! That breaks down to roughly 22 teaspoons a day for each person in America.

High sugar intake has been directly related to obesity, type 2 diabetes, dementia, depression, ADHD, acne, heart disease, infertility, and impotence.

The sad truth is that sugar addiction is not an emotional disorder – sugar cravings are a biological disorder, fueled by the body’s hormones and neurotransmitters. This often leads to uncontrolled eating, which in turn gives cause to the reason why nearly 70 percent of Americans are considered overweight.

Aside from the toll sugar takes on your health, here are some other ways sugar affects you negatively:

Motivation
Sugar affects motivation by reducing dopamine, the motivation neurochemical in your brain.

Brain Fog
Sugar causes brain fog by spiking the hormone insulin, which gives you the rush after you eat sugar. The spike, then, leads to a crash as your insulin plummets.

Insatiability
Consuming sugar only provides temporary satisfaction, which can lead to overeating as we try to satiate by eating more.

Teeth Health
High sugar consumption causes tooth decay.

Now that you have read some of the scary truths about sugar consumption, the best way to see for yourself the effect sugar is having on your body and mind is to try cutting it out for at least 10 days.

Before you start a detox, it is a good idea to have a plan in place, because the cravings will be shockingly strong for the first few days. Here are some steps to follow to help get you ready:

Get in the Right Mindset
Prepare yourself by making the decision to clear your body of sugar. This is important because you won’t have success if you don’t set your mind to it.

Eat a Healthy Diet
Focus on eating healthy carbs, proteins, and fats. Eating healthily will help you feel better as your body starts its detox.

Build New Routines
It is hard to stop any addictive behavior cold turkey, so to soften the withdraw it is best to approach for your detox by gearing up with small changes to your routine, such as cutting cream and sugar from your morning coffee or cutting down on any beverages with sugar throughout the day.

Throw Out the Sugar
Get rid of all the candies and sweets you have in your pantry. And be sure to read those ingredient lists!

Dear Katharine,

Most of us have been warned at some point about the importance of good posture, but chances are that a lot of us haven’t really given this too much thought. Sure, no one wants to end up permanently stooped over, or to find ourselves suffering from chronic back pain, but what does good posture mean beyond appearance? What does it mean for our bodies?

Good posture goes beyond looks. It helps us to stand, walk, sit, and lie in positions with the least amount of strain on the muscles and ligaments activated during movement. It also keeps our bones and joints in alignment, and it helps to support the ligaments holding the spine together to reduce the likelihood of injury.

Poor posture, on the other hand, can lead to strain and cause our bodies to be out of alignment. Stress, obesity, pregnancy, weak muscles, tight muscles, bad working posture, and high-heeled shoes are all major contributors to poor posture.

Luckily, over time many poor posture habits can be reversed by simply practicing good posture.

Follow these instructions to maintain the proper seated and standing positions:

Proper Sitting Position
-Keep your feet flat on the floor or up on a footrest if they don’t touch the ground
-Do not cross your legs. our ankles should rest on the floor (or footrest) in front of your knees
-Sit forward enough in your chair so that there is a small gap between the backs of your knees and your chair.
-Your knees should not be positioned over your feet.
-Relax your shoulders and hold your forearms parallel to the ground.
-Avoid sitting in the same position for long periods of time.

Proper Standing Position
-Maintain the bulk of your weight on the balls of your feet.
-Keep your knees slightly bent. Do not lock them!
-Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart.
-Let your arms hang naturally at your sides.
-Tuck your stomach slightly in.
-Keep your head level so that your earlobes are in line with your shoulders.
-Shift your weight from your toes to your heels, or one foot to the other, if you have to stand for a long time.
