Dear Yoga Enthusiasts,

When you’re sick, usually the last thing you want to do is get out of bed and move your body around. But sometimes, especially when sore and achy, a little stretching could help the most.

The key to doing yoga while you’re sick is to move slowly and to be regularly checking in with your body at every step. When your immune system is down, you need to realize that your body isn’t ready to operate at its regular capacity. This means that those balances and stretches that you might normally be able to do with no issue, could be a little more difficult if you’re battling a sore throat, sinus infection, or quite frankly anything other ailments.

A good rule of thumb is to practice at 60% rather than the 110% you might normally give.

UNLESS you’re in the middle of what feels like the worst bug you’ve had in a long time — in that case, back off and don’t feel bad about skipping your practice. Instead, maybe spend some time in child’s pose and focus on relaxing poses to encourage rest.

Remember: Be kind to your body and feed it nutritious foods and lots and lots of water.

When you’re feeling under the weather, twists and gentle seated folds are your best friend, and getting your blood flowing just a little bit should help promote healing.

Try these three poses to work out the kinks between naps and cups of tea:

Butterfly – Take a seat and bring the bottoms of your feet together to touch. This pose stretches out the hips and gives you the chance to open up a bit.

Happy baby- Carefully, tilt back until you are laying on your back and reach for your feet. Bend your knees toward your ears and relax into happy baby. Take the chance to rock back and forth a bit, perhaps letting each leg stretch out straight one at a time.

Supine twist – It is common to be sleeping in awkward positions when sick. Whether it be due to soreness, congestion, or nausea, your body suffers from not sleeping comfortably. To remedy this, take the time for a supine twist every couple hours. Just lay down, bend a knee, and twist it to the opposite side of your body. Extend your arms and move your head to face the opposite direction that your knee is pointed in. Repeat on the other side.

Hemp vs Marijuana: The Difference Explained

Due to almost a century of misinformation about Cannabis, the distinction between Cannabis and its two primary species — hemp and marijuana — has become unclear to the many and some even consider the three plants to be one and the same. Because of this, the three terms are often used interchangeably, which has created difficulties when understanding the usage and benefits of Hemp vs Marijuana and Cannabis in general.

So, what exactly is the difference between Cannabis, Hemp and Marijuana?

Keep reading to learn more and discover important details you may have never known!

FLAVOR & AROMA
Nigella seeds are probably one of the most confused spices. Over the years I’ve heard nigella referred to as onion seeds, black cumin, black caraway and fennel flower, among others. Let’s just simply call them nigella or kalonji (from Hindi). However you choose to name this spice, what it lacks in aroma — it has just a hint of a savory scent — it makes up for in taste. Nigella seeds have an oregano-like quality with herbaceous notes, a slight bitterness and a warm, toasted-onion flavor. I like to add them whole to salads, sauces and even soups at the last minute just before serving. They are a great replacement for sesame seeds without the sweet element.

ORIGIN Native to the Mediterranean region. Cultivated and found wild mainly in Egypt and India, but also in other parts of North Africa, western and southern Asia, Southern Europe and the Middle East

HARVEST SEASON Nigella is an annual plant with delicate blue or white flowers that bloom in July. The fruit is a large seed capsule with up to seven follicles that contain small, pear-shaped white seeds — they only turn black when exposed to air. When the fruit matures in September, the capsules are gathered before they burst and are then dried and gently crushed for the seeds to be collected.

Signup for Healthy Weight Loss Management!

Dear Mindful Practitioner,

Many of us work hard to eat right and exercise our bodies, but often the mind gets overlooked when it comes to our health.

Meditation often considered an exercise for the brain, is a great way to focus on the health of the mind. Through this mindful practice, the pituitary gland in the brain secretes hormones called endorphins, which result in an amplified feeling of wellbeing.

People often use meditation for stress relief, but there are many other benefits of creating a meditation practice, including:

Anxiety
Relieving stress through meditation has also been known to lessen anxiety, thus creating a calm space for the mind to relax by being present in the moment.

Emotional Health
Routine meditation has been found to decrease inflammatory chemicals in the brain that can affect mood, emotions, and cause depression, which allows for more opportunity to focus on a more positive outlook on life.

Self-Awareness
Taking the time to sit alone can lead to a greater understanding of self and how that self-corresponds to other people.

Sleep
Because meditation settles the mind and body, it is a great practice for helping people with falling asleep and staying asleep.

Pain
Pain is connected to a person’s state of mind, so by relieving stress and balancing the mind and body, a person becomes better equipped to manage pain.

To start your meditation practice, it’s a good idea to set a routine, even if you are starting with just a few minutes a day. The best way to do that is to choose a good time when you can take a few moments to yourself to find a quiet, relaxing spot (parents, this may even be the bathroom!).

Once you are set up with your time and spot, find a comfortable position to either sit on the floor or in a chair – your eyes will be closed for this.

  1. Set Your Intention
Come to your meditation ready to bring yourself relief, to connect, relax, or decompress. Whatever your reason for choosing meditation, this is what you want to come to the practice with.
  2. Relax the Body
Once you are seated with your eyes closed, you want to focus on your breath, and how it is coming in and out of the body as you breathe. Move through your body in your mind and take note of any tension or pain. When you come to this area, stop for a moment and focus on sending your breath to that area.
  3. Pay Attention to Senses
Keeping your mind focused on the sensations you are feeling is a good way to keep the mind centered, or to keep it from wandering.
  4. Come Back to the Body
If you do find your mind wandering, that’s okay, just keep bringing your thoughts back to your breath until the end of your meditation.

This is not going to be easy at first, but the benefits of meditation make it worth it to keep on trying. It does get easier!

Using Coconut Oils as Carrier Oils for Mixing with Black Seed Oils!

In order to keep even your Fur Babies well, HBNaturals has formulated a whole Pet Care line from 4Paws, Calm for Pets, Itch Relief for Pets, Flea & Tick Repellent, Pet Wellness and Cold and Congestion for Pets. These are all formulated just for Pets.

But sometimes you may run out before the next order comes in, especially with the 4Paws as a preventative or stabilizer for helping your pet with illnesses, or old age, you can use Black Seed oil or our HBN Entourage mixed with a carrier oil.

Neither cat or dog cannot take full dosage of Entourage because of the strength of the Black Seed in the Compound, so it is best to mix with a Carrier Oil so will not be as strong and overdose the fur baby.

There are different Carrier oils you can use, (Aloe Vera oil, Coconut Oil, Avocado Oil) but the best for the cat or dog I believe is the Coconut Oil, although the essential Avocado Oils is considered safe for both dogs and cats, as long as it is just the Avocado without the skin or the inside pit. or the leaves.

As I myself, normally have the coconut oil around the house, I chose to use this as the carrier oil for the 4Paws substitute using the Black Seed Extract or Entourage.

Coconut Oil:

For Cats: You can use small amounts of coconut oil with food or apply it topically for cats with skin problems, Gardner says. But, as with any new food or supplement, don’t give your cat too much coconut oil too soon. … For an average-size cat, give ¼ to ½ teaspoon once or twice a day, Gardner recommends.

Mix with Entourage: ¼ to ½ teaspoons coconut oil with 1 to 2 drips of Entourage 1 to 2 times a day. (start with small amounts and gradually increase.)

For Dogs: Coconut oil is good for dogs and can help aid your pets’ digestion, improve their coats, help prevent infection and more. But please note, it is important to follow the proper guidelines. As with most things, too much of even a good thing can end up having negative effects.

The recommended dose is pretty easy; just give a teaspoon of coconut oil per 10 pounds of dog, or you can give a tablespoon per 30 pounds. Start with about 1/4 the recommended dosage and build up to the recommended level over 3-4 weeks, as sometimes flu-like symptoms can appear if you hurried it right away.”
Mix with Entourage: 1 teaspoon of coconut oil ( per 10 lbs) with 2 to 5 drops of Entourage. 2 times a day. (start with small amounts and gradually increase.)

It is recommended that you place it in their food, water, or if they will take it, directly on their tongue. It all depends on the way your dog or cat will chose to ingest the mixture.

HBNaturals carries both the Entourage and the Black Seed Extract.
Entourage – PIP: https://my.hbnaturals.com/HBN/member/doc/entourage-PIP.pdf
Black Seed extract – PIP: https://my.hbnaturals.com/HBN/member/doc/BlackSeedExtract-PIP.pdf

HBNaturals also carries 4Paws for your fur Babies, but if in a pinch can use with above recommendations. 4PAWS PIP: https://my.hbnaturals.com/HBN/member/doc/4paws-pip.pdf

Dear Reader,

Incredibly, 75 to 90 percent of all doctors office visits are related to conditions that are the result of stress. Unchecked stress can wreak havoc on the body, and in chronic cases it can lead to heart disease, diabetes, weight gain, mental disorders, digestive disorders, and even cancer. This is possible because chronic stress changes our hormones, which can cause an increase in inflammation, which is the root of many medical problems.

We can’t always control the amount of stress that enters into our lives, but we can change how it is we react to them. The human body is designed to respond to stress, but it is how we handle it that causes the problem.

With practice, we can learn how to release some of our stress through many productive measures.

Here’s are some ways:

Exercise and Yoga
Exercise is one of the best stress relieving activities because it releases endorphins, the chemical in the brain that acts as the body’s natural pain-killer. Exercise also helps to improve sleep, which in turn helps to relieve stress.

Meditation
Meditation is proven to decrease stress, worry, and anxiety through a mindful practice of centered relaxation and breathing (breathing exercises below).

Nutrient-Dense Diet
A diet rich in essential vitamins, minerals, healthy fats, electrolytes, amino acids, and antioxidants works to help your brain handle stress, which has the same effect on the entire body.

Time in Nature
Spending time outside in nature has a calming effect on the mind and body, and it helps to create a sense of wellbeing.

Breathing exercises have long been used for stress relief. Whether you are in the car, in a tense situation, or seated in a relaxed position in a quiet space, breathing exercises have an immediate effect.

Give these exercises a try:

Pursed Lip Breathing
Take a breath for about 2 counts. Then pucker your lips and exhale for 4 counts. Do this for a few rounds.

Diaphragmatic Breathing
Put one hand on your chest and the other on your belly. As you breathe in deeply for about 2 seconds, your belly should stick out a bit. Feel the air expanding your stomach and then breathe out slowly through the lips.

Yoga Breathing
Place your right thumb over your right nostril as you breathe in through the left nostril. Then take your right ring finger and place it over your left nostril as you exhale from the right one. Then switch sides.

4-7-8
Inhale for a count of 4. Hold the breath in for 7 counts, then release it in 8 counts.epeat this at least three times.

Breath Counting
Take a few deep breaths, then settle into a pattern of “normal” breathing. When you exhale, count “one.” The next time, count “two.” Do this until you have exhaled (and counted to) five, then start the pattern over.

Dear Health Enthusiast,

The word detox might inspire images of someone starving on just lemon water and cayenne, or maybe you think of that friend that did a juice cleanse and had a migraine for three days. detox doesn’t have to be that extreme! It can simply mean that you focus your efforts on changing some of your routines to help create a more balanced mind and body.

Due to environmental exposure, our bodies can become overwhelmed by toxins that enter into your body via water, air, food, pharmaceuticals, or other drugs.

Cleansing the body does not have to be as extreme or restrictive as some diets you’ve maybe heard of, or even tried yourself. In fact, simple changes, such as considering changes to the following are great ways to start the detoxification process:

Water
Start each day with a glass of spring or filtered water and the juice of one lemon to help flush toxins and alkalize the body. Be sure to also continue drinking water throughout the day.

Vegetable Juice
Drink a freshly made vegetable juice daily that includes hearty greens such as kale and spinach helps to cleanse the cells of toxins.

Oils
Eliminate toxic oils from your diet such as vegetable, peanut, and canola. Instead, use oils high in omega-3s, -6s, and -9s, such as extra-virgin olive oil, coconut oil, hemp oil, or avocado oil.

Tea
Teas such as dandelion, milk thistle, and nettles are great for detoxification.

Raw Fruits and Vegetables
Fruit and vegetables contain enzymes that improve nutrient absorption and aid digestion.

Sugar
Avoid white sugars and any other artificial sweeteners, as they can toxify the body. Instead, opt for natural sweeteners such as stevia, honey, coconut sugar, date sugar, molasses, or maple syrup.

White Flour
Consuming white flour overworks the digestive system and can cause digestive disorders. Substitute with other flours such as spelt flour, kamut flour, quinoa flour, or brown rice flour

Kick off your morning with this Sunrise Detox Smoothie:

Ingredients
-1 frozen banana
-1/2 cup frozen mango
-1/2 cup pineapple
-1/2 cup frozen raspberries
-1 cup coconut water
-juice of one lemon

Instructions
Place ingredients in a high-speed blender and blend until smooth.

This smoothie is layered to look like a sunrise, so to get that gradient effect, blend the raspberries and other fruit separately and then pour in layers to create the effect. Of course, it tastes just the same and has the same benefits if you just throw it all together too.

Sex!???

Dear Health Enthusiast,

Although often considered a ‘taboo’ subject, issues with sexual performance are far more common than most people think. The trouble arises when prescription medication fails to deliver desired results, which an overwhelming amount of people experience – between 10 to 52% of men and 25% to 63% of women. As sexual health has always been a personal matter and one which can easily become entangled with issues of self-worth and self-image, the failure of medical drugs to deliver expected results can contribute to low levels of self-esteem and emotional distress.

The fact of the matter is that just as every relationship is different, every BODY is different too, and will respond in largely contrasting ways to medication. Functional medicine, however, focuses on helping the individual to not only figure out what is best for their unique needs and symptoms but also how to PREVENT it from occurring again and lower the risks of the condition worsening, using natural treatment options.

Issues surrounding sexual performance can include (but are not limited to):

Erectile dysfunction in men
Lowered libido
Vaginal dryness
Sexual performance anxiety
All of these conditions have in the past been treated with pharmaceutical drugs, a large amount of which can have negative side-effects when used over a long period of time. With the help of natural remedies, many people have seen their symptoms decrease significantly and sometimes even completely subside.

What Are Some Functional Medicine Techniques?

By looking at the individual as a whole as a means of treating their sexual performance issues, functional health professionals can identify the root cause of the issue instead of simply making it disappear temporarily. The only way to truly heal from an issue like this is to dig deep and find the root cause – whether it be physical, mental, environmental, emotional, or spiritual. These are the elements which functional health focuses on in order to get to the true cause of the issues like these that often manifest themselves physically.

In terms of sexual health, it is of utmost importance to recognize and acknowledge your own struggles with performance. Not being open to these issues is often the primary cause of them worsening and festering over time. Learning as much as you can about the issue – be it a hormonal imbalance due to anxiety, a nutritional issue, or something else entirely – is the best and only way to make effective changes.

There are foods you can include in your diet that boost sexual health and increase libido – while we can’t necessarily promise they will increase your performance, improving your nutrition WILL help to ensure that your sexual health is improved significantly!

Foods to boost sexual health include:

Spinach
Dark chocolate
Peppers
Green tea
Oysters
Pesto
Ginger
Pumpkin seeds
Bananas
Potatoes
Fatty Fish
Coffee
Red wine
What combinations of these will you try?

We are motivated to educate as many people as possible which is why we host many events at our office. From in-person educational experiences to virtual webinars and even parties to celebrate our patients, we encourage everyone to get involved with all of our offerings. What’s the Deal with Caffeine?

Dear Reader,

Caffeine is surprisingly one of the world’s most popular mood-altering drugs. Whether it be consumed via coffee, tea, soda, chocolate, or even in some medicines, caffeine is a highly sought after stimulant.

In fact, billions of people worldwide drink coffee, soda, or some other form of caffeine every day.

Luckily for the masses, caffeine is considered safe for consumption and even has many touted health benefits, but this only applies to consumption in moderation. And while there are standards for moderation, caffeine interacts differently with each person’s physiology, so what is moderate for one person may be excessive for another.

However, most of us have no idea if we are consuming too much because we never take a break from our beloved caffeine to feel the effects, but if you are experiencing any of the following, you may want to consider taking a break to see how your body will respond:

-insomnia
-high blood pressure
-anxiety
-indigestion
-low fertility

Cutting or reducing your caffeine intake could have the following positive effects:

-better sleep
-better mood
-healthier teeth
-reduced anxiety
-better digestion

Of course, as with any stimulant, cutting back or quitting is often accompanied by an uneasy period as our bodies go through withdrawal. We may find ourselves feeling fatigued, irritable, depressed, and unfortunately, this is typically topped off with a headache. Thankfully, this is temporary, and there are many alternative ways to give us the boost we are missing from our beloved caffeine.

Water should always be the number one drink to replace any beverage you remove from your diet. The added hydration will help you with your withdrawal symptoms, and being hydrated will give you a natural boost of energy anyway!

Here are some other ways to keep your energy up as you cut back or remove caffeine from your diet:

Ginkgo Biloba
Ginkgo is an herbal extract from the nut of the Ginkgo tree. It has been used for centuries in Chinese medicine to increase blood flow to the brain and body. Consumed as a tea, a tincture, or in capsule form, Ginkgo has been known to increase focus, wellbeing, and energy.

Ginseng
Ginseng is an extract derived from the ginseng root. Consumed as a tea, a tincture, or in capsule form, ginseng increases blood flow and has a stimulating effect, much like coffee.

Vitamin B12
Vitamin B12 is a great supplement for jump-starting your day. B12 is known to enhance energy and mental clarity. Taken as a pill or a tincture, B12 is best absorbed under the tongue.

Teeccino and Cafix
These natural caffeine substitutes are made from grains, figs, chicory, and beetroot designed to mimic the flavor of coffee, but without the caffeine.

Stretch
A good stretch in the morning boosts oxygen metabolism in the blood, which sends oxygen to the muscles and brain to increase alertness and focus.

Apple
Consider starting your day with an apple, or having one as a snack when you start to feel yourself lag. The fructose in an apple boosts metabolism into energy production.

Sparkling Water
For soda drinkers, a can of cold sparkling water can wake up the senses by mimicking the experience of drinking a soda, but without the added sugar and caffeine.

As with any major change, it is important to stay open to the fact that this is a transitory time, and it is going to take a moment for your body to adjust.

Dear Goal Setters,

When you’re in the beginning stages of setting a goal or planning a project, it’s easy to get excited; but over time, it’s natural to lose steam.

First, know this: there will always be a lull in the middle of a project. Beginnings and endings are fun and exciting, it’s in the middle of a project where you’re most likely to quit – it’s frustrating, messy, and if you don’t have a plan in place to deal with setbacks and roadblocks, your project risks coming to a halt.

To keep this from happening, try the following tips:

Have another project in progress. When you hit a creative wall in one project, sometimes the best way to break through it is to walk away. There’s a good chance that when you return to your project, the answer to your problem will become clear. Keep in mind that this tactic of goal setting can quickly turn into procrastination, so it’s vital to ensure that your other projects are also productive and will get you toward your overall goal.

Baby steps. Big tasks are not tasks in and of themselves; they’re usually groups of small jobs. If you get overwhelmed looking at a to-do-list, break up your tasks into more manageable steps.

Monitor your process. This way you’ll be able to effortlessly visualize how much you’ve done so far. Whether this is creating a spreadsheet, downloading an app, or just keeping a giant to-do list that you’re crossing things off from – figure out what’s best for you.

“The trouble with not having a goal is that you can spend your life running up and down the field and never score.” – Bill Copeland
