Dear Friends,

Were you aware that the average American consumes about 152 pounds of sugar a year! That breaks down to roughly 22 teaspoons a day for each person in America.

High sugar intake has been directly related to obesity, type 2 diabetes, dementia, depression, ADHD, acne, heart disease, infertility, and impotence.

The sad truth is that sugar addiction is not an emotional disorder – sugar cravings are a biological disorder, fueled by the body’s hormones and neurotransmitters. This often leads to uncontrolled eating, which in turn gives cause to the reason why nearly 70 percent of Americans are considered overweight.

Aside from the toll sugar takes on your health, here are some other ways sugar affects you negatively:

Motivation
Sugar affects motivation by reducing dopamine, the motivation neurochemical in your brain.

Brain Fog
Sugar causes brain fog by spiking the hormone insulin, which gives you the rush after you eat sugar. The spike, then, leads to a crash as your insulin plummets.

Insatiability
Consuming sugar only provides temporary satisfaction, which can lead to overeating as we try to satiate by eating more.

Teeth Health
High sugar consumption causes tooth decay.

Now that you have read some of the scary truths about sugar consumption, the best way to see for yourself the effect sugar is having on your body and mind is to try cutting it out for at least 10 days.

Before you start a detox, it is a good idea to have a plan in place, because the cravings will be shockingly strong for the first few days. Here are some steps to follow to help get you ready:

Get in the Right Mindset
Prepare yourself by making the decision to clear your body of sugar. This is important because you won’t have success if you don’t set your mind to it.

Eat a Healthy Diet
Focus on eating healthy carbs, proteins, and fats. Eating healthily will help you feel better as your body starts its detox.

Build New Routines
It is hard to stop any addictive behavior cold turkey, so to soften the withdraw it is best to approach for your detox by gearing up with small changes to your routine, such as cutting cream and sugar from your morning coffee or cutting down on any beverages with sugar throughout the day.

Throw Out the Sugar
Get rid of all the candies and sweets you have in your pantry. And be sure to read those ingredient lists!

DO YOU HAVE CHRONIC INFLAMMATION?

Click here to download chronic inflammation flyer

The ancient Greeks described inflammation as “the internal fire.”

Anyone who has cut, sprained, or burned themselves has experienced pain, heat, redness, and swelling – the sure signs of acute inflammation. Inflammation is one of the body’s natural ways of protecting itself from foreign invaders like viruses, fungi, bacteria, chemicals, toxins, etc. In all these cases, inflammation is a good and natural thing. Without it, wounds would never heal, and germs would win the war.

Unfortunately, as with any process in the body, it is possible to have too much of a good thing…

Chronic inflammation is very different from acute inflammation. Chronic inflammation is not the kind you can feel or even something you can see under a microscope. “It’s very subtle,” says Professor Joel Mason, M.D., director of the Vitamins and Carcinogenesis Laboratory at the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging (HNRCA) at Tufts. “It’s inflammation on a biochemical level.”

“Inflammation is thought to be an important basis not just for cancer, but for insulin resistance and diabetes and athero-sclerotic disease and any number of other conditions,” Mason says. “There is a lot of research going on into what role inflammation plays in a lot of the chronic degenerative diseases that our society falls prey to.”

Many medical conditions are believed to be linked to chronic inflammation in the body. Some of these include:

  • Alzheimer’s Disease
  • Asthma
  • Cancer
  • Chronic Obstructive Lung Diseases (emphysema and bronchitis)
  • Chronic Pain
  • Type 2 Diabetes
  • Heart Disease
  • Inflammatory Bowel Disease
  • Stroke
  • Diseases where the immune system attacks the body, such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, or scleroderma

Are you affected by an inflammation-rooted disease? We invite you to lower your body’s inflammation with MIND, BODY, and SOUL Ayurvedic Superfood Shots so you can look and feel great again!

He’s a great Anti-Inflamation Smoothie! Enjoy!

Dear Katharine,

Most of us have been warned at some point about the importance of good posture, but chances are that a lot of us haven’t really given this too much thought. Sure, no one wants to end up permanently stooped over, or to find ourselves suffering from chronic back pain, but what does good posture mean beyond appearance? What does it mean for our bodies?

Good posture goes beyond looks. It helps us to stand, walk, sit, and lie in positions with the least amount of strain on the muscles and ligaments activated during movement. It also keeps our bones and joints in alignment, and it helps to support the ligaments holding the spine together to reduce the likelihood of injury.

Poor posture, on the other hand, can lead to strain and cause our bodies to be out of alignment. Stress, obesity, pregnancy, weak muscles, tight muscles, bad working posture, and high-heeled shoes are all major contributors to poor posture.

Luckily, over time many poor posture habits can be reversed by simply practicing good posture.

Follow these instructions to maintain the proper seated and standing positions:

Proper Sitting Position
-Keep your feet flat on the floor or up on a footrest if they don’t touch the ground
-Do not cross your legs. our ankles should rest on the floor (or footrest) in front of your knees
-Sit forward enough in your chair so that there is a small gap between the backs of your knees and your chair.
-Your knees should not be positioned over your feet.
-Relax your shoulders and hold your forearms parallel to the ground.
-Avoid sitting in the same position for long periods of time.

Proper Standing Position
-Maintain the bulk of your weight on the balls of your feet.
-Keep your knees slightly bent. Do not lock them!
-Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart.
-Let your arms hang naturally at your sides.
-Tuck your stomach slightly in.
-Keep your head level so that your earlobes are in line with your shoulders.
-Shift your weight from your toes to your heels, or one foot to the other, if you have to stand for a long time.

Dear Katharine,

A friend of mine recently suggested that yoga is “just stretching.” My first thought was, ‘clearly, she’s never attempted chaturanga.’ My second thought was that I felt sorry for her that she hadn’t yet discovered the benefits of staying fit by practicing yoga.

For most people, exercise isn’t considered a “fun” activity, and until I discovered yoga, I completely agreed with that statement. For some, running isn’t a good time, going to a gym is daunting and confusing, and joining a spin class is expensive! Yoga, however, allows you to practice at your own pace, from the comfort of your own bedroom. It helps you to sit up straighter, tones your arms and core, improves your balance, and as a plus, you may find your pants fitting better too! On top of that, you may find your body begin to actually crave yoga in a way that it never craved the elliptical, weights, or any other exercise modality that may not have been right for you.

In one of the first studies done in the United States that examines the relationship between fitness and yoga, researchers at the University of California at Davis tested the muscular strength and endurance, flexibility, cardiorespiratory fitness, body composition, and lung function of 10 college students before and after 8 weeks of yoga training. For those 8 weeks, students attended 4 sessions per week that included 10 minutes of pranayama (breathing), 15 minutes of warm up, 50 minutes of asanas (poses), and 10 minutes of meditation. At the end of the 8 weeks, muscular strength of the students had increased by 31 percent, muscular endurance by 57 percent, and flexibility as much as 188 percent!

Studies like the one mentioned above have included an hour of practice two to four days of week, so if you want to test these results, make sure that you’re meeting that mark.

Also, be sure that you’re incorporating strengthening poses into your routine, such as warrior II, tree pose, triangle pose, downward dog, boat pose, bridge pose, and plank. In particular, make sure that your practice includes a series of standing and balancing poses, like warrior III and half moon pose.

You likely already know that many health experts consider collagen the closest thing on earth to a real “fountain of youth” — especially in terms of helping your skin, hair, joints, and gut health.

And it’s really no surprise collagen is so key to anti-aging, because collagen actually makes up 75% of your skin.

It makes up 70% to 80% of your ligaments, tendons, and joints, and 90% of our bones, nails and hair.

Your Health Matters presents: Is it Normal to feel Anxiety?

Dear Friends and Followers,

Anxiety is a perfectly normal response to stressors, like being caught in up a dangerous situation, taking a test, or having to make an important decision, but when anxiety becomes a constant response or a response to inappropriate situations, it becomes problematic.

Anxiety affects many people throughout their lives. For some, it is merely situational, but for others, anxiety is constant and can lead to disorders. These include generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and social anxiety disorder.

Let HBN Help you feel less Anxious!https://hbnaturals.com/katharine

Some causes of anxiety include:
-stress
-trauma
-thyroid disorders
-dysfunctional serotonin
-excessive alcohol consumption
-caffeine and sugar intake
-hormonal imbalance

Physical and psychological symptoms of anxiety include:
-muscle tension
-chest tightness
-heart palpitations
-high blood pressure
-insomnia
-digestive problems
-panic attacks
-irritability
-difficulty concentrating
-restlessness
-sweating
-anxiousness
-inability to socialize

Psychotropic drugs and cognitive behavioral therapy are the conventional methods for anxiety treatment, and with an estimated one-third of the population suffering from anxiety, it is no doubt that the number of medications is equally high.

However, there are many natural remedies for anxiety out there that have been proven effective without the adverse side effects. These include several changes to diet and lifestyle.

Visit Heart and Body Naturals for your Natural Approach to Anxiety

Here are some natural, proactive lifestyle changes that can help to reduce the symptoms of anxiety:

Avoid Sugary and Processed Foods
Consuming foods with a high glycemic index, like processed and fast foods, can contribute to anxiety and depression. Additionally, sugar and refined carbohydrates can cause blood sugar levels to fluctuate wildly, increasing anxiety, nervousness and fatigue.

Alcohol and Caffeine
Alcohol and caffeine can both enhance anxiety symptoms by causing tension, moodiness, and the jitters. Reduce anxiety by avoiding alcohol completely, or by limiting your intake to 1–3 drinks per week, with no more than two at a time. Limit coffee or black tea to no more than one cup per day.

Ashwagandha
Ashwagandha, a powerful herb, is often used as a natural remedy for anxiety, as it helps to stabilize the body’s response to stress. Ashwagandha improves focus, reduces fatigue, and helps to fight anxiety without the attending side effects of anti-anxiety medications.

Kava Root
Kava root is used to treat anxiety by stimulating dopamine receptors in the brain, which induces euphoria and a sense of wellbeing. It is a great alternative to anti-anxiety medications because it is non-addictive and non-hypnotic, but still increases positive mood and relaxation. Kava should be taken under the guidance of a health care provider, as it has been known to interact with certain medications.

Magnesium
Because magnesium is a common deficiency in adults, you should consider supplementing as it is great for relaxing muscles and the nervous system.

Lavender Oil
Lavender is a natural sedative, and it helps reduce anxiety by allowing the body to relax.

Physical Activity
Physical activity helps to reduce stress, improve sleep, reduce inflammation, increase energy, and boost confidence. It takes around half an hour of sustained exercise to see the effects on anxiety levels.
