How to make Bath Bombs

We all like a good soak in the tub when ever possible. Adding bath bombs to your bath gives a relaxing, yet invigorating feeling! But Bath Bombs can go as high as $6 each or more for a half dozen.   So why not make your own?   It’s simple with the right ingredients!  Am sure you already have the majority of the products already in your kitchen, if not a trip to the dollar store, craft store and or grocery store, you can acquire the right ingredients. Next step, start making your own! I’ve including a few recipes, I’ve found that are so easy and fun to make! So are you ready?  Here’s how!

Tools & Materials

  • 8 oz baking soda
  • 4 oz Epsom salt
  • 4 oz corn starch
  • 4 oz citric acid
  • Large bowl
  • Whisk
  • Biodegradable glitter or dried flower petals (optional)
  • 2.5 tablespoons coconut oil (or any other veggie oil)
  • About 1 tablespoon water
  • About 2 teaspoons essential oil (for scent)
  • 4-6 drops of food coloring
  • Small jar or bowl
  • 12-18 silicone molds


  1. First, mix the dry ingredients (baking soda, Epsom salt, corn starch, and citric acid) together in a large bowl. Use the whisk to make sure the mixture is clump-free. Baking soda, also known as sodium bicarbonate, is a key ingredient in this bathtub explosion: When the high pH powder reacts with a low pH acid, it produces carbon dioxide bubbles. Remember those baking soda and vinegar volcanoes you made in elementary school? Citric acid takes the place of vinegar in this chemical equation, but it doesn’t react with sodium bicarbonate until it gets wet. If you want, you can add visual decorations like biodegradable glitter into the mix. Just don’t use regular-old craft glitter, because it’s no good for our friends in the ocean.
  2. Now mix up the wet ingredients (oil, water, essential oil, and food coloring). The easiest way to get this party started is to put them in a jar and shake them up. This is the step where you need to make some important decisions about scent. You can tweak quantity to suit your taste, but you should use about two teaspoons total of essential oil or perfume. Try cinnamon, cocoa, peppermint, or coffee scents for the winter holidays (or a combination of all four to make a mocha-licious bath). Or go with something classic, like a spa-like eucalyptus and lavender mix or a straight-up sugary hit of vanilla extract. The possibilities are truly endless. It’s also time to make decisions about color. We recommend sticking to a single hue to avoid accidentally muddying the bath waters. Stick to something like 4-6 drops of food coloring total, but feel free to mix up different pigments.
  3. Slowly add the liquid to the dry mixture. Really slowly. Like a teaspoon at a time. Whisk as you go, and slow down if things start to look fizzy. You should end up with a mixture that just barely clumps together, like damp sand.
  4. Stuff that stuff into your silicone molds, ASAP. You don’t want the mix to dry out while it’s still in the bowl, which is why you should make sure you have enough molds to make a dozen or more bombs at once. Press the mixture down firmly into your silicone molds of choice.
  5. Let the bath bombs dry. If your mold has a lot of details in it, you might just want to give them a whole day to be safe. Then pop them out.
  6. Throw one into the tub and enjoy the explosive fruits of your labor. Bag the rest up in cellophane and make your friends and family love you forever.

Adding either CBD or Black seed oils to the Bath Bombs, helps with chronic pain, fibromyalgia, arthritis, joint pain, sore muscles, among other medical issues!   Although no medical claims, we offer good advice!

CBD Muscle Tension Bath Bomb

• ½ cup baking soda
• 2 tablespoons cream of tartar
• 1/3 cup unscented Epsom salt
• 2 tablespoons coconut oil
• 1 ½ droppers of CBD oil
1) Mix Epsom salt with baking soda and cream of tartar together, breaking any clumps as you mix.
2) Blend into the Epsom salt mix the CBD and coconut oil. You may need to spritz or sprinkle lightly with some water for better mixing consistency) It should be slightly moist but still crumbly.
3) Spoon mixture into molds and allow to set for 4 hours. Once set pop out of molds.

Making your own Bath Bombs – Citrus Scent!

Supplies Needed for Homemade Bath Bombs:

  • Baking soda
  • Citric acid
  • Epsom salt
  • Cornstarch
  • Coconut oil
  • Essential oils (optional, but recommended)
  • Large mixing bowl
  • Small mixing bowl (or glass measuring cup with a spout)
  • Measuring cups/spoons
  • Bath bomb molds (or muffin tin)
  • If gifting: Plastic molds you can give away or plastic used for shrink wrapping
  • Powdered all-natural food coloring
  • Prizes to put inside
  • Rubber gloves

Homemade Natural Bath Bombs


  • 1 cup baking soda
  • 1/2 cup citric acid, anything acidic can damage some countertops (especially marble) so be careful!
  • 1/2 cup Epsom salt, recommended to me by my chiropractor to help with sore muscles
  • 1/2 cup cornstarch
  • 2 teaspoons all natural food coloring, optional (natural powdered food coloring activates when wet in the tub and will not stain)
  • 2 tablespoons coconut oil, melted/warm
  • 1 teaspoon water, do not use more than this!
  • 10 drops your favorite essential oil, we used Plant Therapy essential oils
  • prizes to go inside – optional!, (we used “Magic Grow Capsules” that expand when wet)

    1. In a large bowl whisk together the baking soda, citric acid, Epsom salt, cornstarch and (only if using) powdered food coloring.
    2. In a separate small bowl combine the melted coconut oil, water and essential oils. (We used peppermint, but I’m guessing that this would work great with lavender, sweet orange or chamomile.)
    3. While continuously whisking, very slowly drizzle the liquid ingredients into the dry ingredients until well combined. The outcome (as pictured below) should be similar to a dry, crumbly sand and should not be a “wet” consistency. Warning: If mixture gets too wet it will activate the fizzy part of the bath bomb too soon!
    4. TIGHTLY pack the mixture into each side of the mold then press the two sides together. Ideally let it stay in the mold overnight, then lightly tap around the mold with a spoon to very carefully open and remove bath bomb. Finished product will still be somewhat fragile, so be careful!
    5. A Note about Molds and Gifting: I’ve read the stainless steel molds work best, so that’s what we used with no problems. Bath Bombs (both homemade and store bought) can be fragile though, so we plan to transfer into same-size plastic molds for gifting. Alternatively, you can use a hair dryer on shrink wrap baggies made for the purpose of packaging bath bombs. I ordered a set that includes both options for our gifts this year. Either way, I would definitely make sure the DIY bath bombs are protected before handing them over!

Relaxing Lavender Bath Bombs

Cook time 1 hour | Total time 1 hour | Recipe type: Bath Bombs | Serves: 7 bath bombs


  • Stainless Steel Bath Bomb Mold
  • 32 oz. Baking Soda
  • 16 oz. Citric Acid
  • 4 oz. Extra Fine Epsom Salt
  • 2 oz. Borage Oil
  • 0.7 oz. Polysorbate 80
  • 0.3 oz. Lavender 40/42 Essential Oil
  • About 12 drops Lilac La Bomb Colorant
  • Dried Lavender
  • Witch Hazel in a Spray Bottle


  1. In a small container, add 2 ounces of borage oil, 0.7 ounces of polysorbate 80, 0.3 ounces of lavender 40/42 essential oil, and about 12 drops of Lilac La Bomb Colorant. Use a spoon to thoroughly mix all the ingredients together. The colorant won’t incorporate fully, but that’s okay.
  2. In a large container, add 32 ounces of baking soda and 16 ounces of citric acid. To get rid of clumps, push the powder through a sifter or break them up with your fingers. Citric acid has a tendency to take off nail polish, so wear gloves to protect your manicure. Add 4 ounces of Epsom salt. Thoroughly stir the ingredients together.
  3. Add the oil to the dry ingredients. Use your hands to thoroughly mix the dry and wet ingredients together.
  4. Check the consistency of the bath bomb mixture. The perfect consistency is similar to wet sand that holds its shape when squeezed. If it’s too dry, use one hand to spritz the mixture with witch hazel and one to mix. Continue spritzing until the mixture holds its shape.
  5. Place a pinch of dried lavender in the center of one half of the Stainless Steel Bath Bomb Mold.
  6. Fill both halves of the mold with bath bomb mixture and press it into the molds. You don’t need to press too hard – it helps the bath bomb halves stick together if some of the mixture is loose on top. Once both halves are full, press them firmly together.
  7. Very gently, pull the top half of the mold away while twisting. It can be a little tricky to get the bath bombs to stick together, but practice makes perfect. To safely unmold the other half, place the top of the mold back on, flip the bath bomb over, and release the other side by twisting and pulling away gently.
  8. Place the bath bomb on the counter or in a container that will hold them in place without rolling away. We used the 6 Cavity Silicone Dome Mold. You can also use a large muffin tin or a soft surface like foam. Allow the bath bombs to fully dry and harden overnight. Once you’re ready to use, place in hot bath water and enjoy!

Making your own bath bombs can be so much fun, even for your young adults and teenagers! Make it a group project! Enjoy!
