What’s the Deal with Caffeine?

Dear Reader,

Caffeine is surprisingly one of the world’s most popular mood-altering drugs. Whether it be consumed via coffee, tea, soda, chocolate, or even in some medicines, caffeine is a highly sought after stimulant.

In fact, billions of people worldwide drink coffee, soda, or some other form of caffeine every day.

Luckily for the masses, caffeine is considered safe for consumption and even has many touted health benefits, but this only applies to consumption in moderation. And while there are standards for moderation, caffeine interacts differently with each person’s physiology, so what is moderate for one person may be excessive for another.

However, most of us have no idea if we are consuming too much because we never take a break from our beloved caffeine to feel the effects, but if you are experiencing any of the following, you may want to consider taking a break to see how your body will respond:

-insomnia
-high blood pressure
-anxiety
-indigestion
-low fertility

Cutting or reducing your caffeine intake could have the following positive effects:

-better sleep
-better mood
-healthier teeth
-reduced anxiety
-better digestion

Of course, as with any stimulant, cutting back or quitting is often accompanied by an uneasy period as our bodies go through withdrawal. We may find ourselves feeling fatigued, irritable, depressed, and unfortunately, this is typically topped off with a headache. Thankfully, this is temporary, and there are many alternative ways to give us the boost we are missing from our beloved caffeine.

Water should always be the number one drink to replace any beverage you remove from your diet. The added hydration will help you with your withdrawal symptoms, and being hydrated will give you a natural boost of energy anyway!

Here are some other ways to keep your energy up as you cut back or remove caffeine from your diet:

Ginkgo Biloba
Ginkgo is an herbal extract from the nut of the Ginkgo tree. It has been used for centuries in Chinese medicine to increase blood flow to the brain and body. Consumed as a tea, a tincture, or in capsule form, Ginkgo has been known to increase focus, wellbeing, and energy.

Ginseng
Ginseng is an extract derived from the ginseng root. Consumed as a tea, a tincture, or in capsule form, ginseng increases blood flow and has a stimulating effect, much like coffee.

Vitamin B12
Vitamin B12 is a great supplement for jump-starting your day. B12 is known to enhance energy and mental clarity. Taken as a pill or a tincture, B12 is best absorbed under the tongue.

Teeccino and Cafix
These natural caffeine substitutes are made from grains, figs, chicory, and beetroot designed to mimic the flavor of coffee, but without the caffeine.

Stretch
A good stretch in the morning boosts oxygen metabolism in the blood, which sends oxygen to the muscles and brain to increase alertness and focus.

Apple
Consider starting your day with an apple, or having one as a snack when you start to feel yourself lag. The fructose in an apple boosts metabolism into energy production.

Sparkling Water
For soda drinkers, a can of cold sparkling water can wake up the senses by mimicking the experience of drinking a soda, but without the added sugar and caffeine.

As with any major change, it is important to stay open to the fact that this is a transitory time, and it is going to take a moment for your body to adjust.

Dear Goal Setters,

When you’re in the beginning stages of setting a goal or planning a project, it’s easy to get excited; but over time, it’s natural to lose steam.

First, know this: there will always be a lull in the middle of a project. Beginnings and endings are fun and exciting, it’s in the middle of a project where you’re most likely to quit – it’s frustrating, messy, and if you don’t have a plan in place to deal with setbacks and roadblocks, your project risks coming to a halt.

To keep this from happening, try the following tips:

Have another project in progress. When you hit a creative wall in one project, sometimes the best way to break through it is to walk away. There’s a good chance that when you return to your project, the answer to your problem will become clear. Keep in mind that this tactic of goal setting can quickly turn into procrastination, so it’s vital to ensure that your other projects are also productive and will get you toward your overall goal.

Baby steps. Big tasks are not tasks in and of themselves; they’re usually groups of small jobs. If you get overwhelmed looking at a to-do-list, break up your tasks into more manageable steps.

Monitor your process. This way you’ll be able to effortlessly visualize how much you’ve done so far. Whether this is creating a spreadsheet, downloading an app, or just keeping a giant to-do list that you’re crossing things off from – figure out what’s best for you.

“The trouble with not having a goal is that you can spend your life running up and down the field and never score.” – Bill Copeland

Keep your Facebook account Secure

Many of you have Facebook to use for Business, keeping connecting with family and friends from around the world. Love to play games, promote your products or simply there for the connecting and keeping others up to date with your life events!

But Facebook also provides a way for thieves, hackers and scammers to prey on the innocent! my security and well as anyone else’s security is what matters, that is why I decided to write this post that includes steps from Winzip System Tools and Security for keeping your Facebook Safe! These are also rules that Facebook itself offers for you privacy and security!

Privacy matters
You may have privacy concerns — after all, you don’t want your whole life out there for anyone to see!
What if the wrong person sees you’re on vacation and realizes your home and possessions are vulnerable? What if hackers get a hold of your personal information and steal your identity? Maybe you just want to keep some things between yourself and a trusted group of friends and family.
Whatever your concerns are, we’re here to help. Facebook does have measures in place for you to protect your account. You just need to know how to activate them!
Straight from Facebook itself, here are six things you can do right away to help make sure you have a safe account.

  1. Choose a Strong Password
The password you use to log in is the first step toward securing your Facebook account. You probably have a “favorite” password that you use everywhere online. And we get it — it’s easier to remember that way! But this is actually a terrible idea when it comes to your online security.
Just think about it — if a hacker figures out your favorite password to your Facebook, and you use that same password for your email account and your online banking account… Do you see where we’re going with this? It’s like giving them a master key.
That’s why you need a strong password that can’t be easily guessed. A strong password is like a strong lock on your front door.
Here are a few basic rules to follow when it comes to choosing a password.
  2. Don’t include your name, pet names, birthdate, or any other personal information that can be easily gleaned from your profile. Also avoid common words like “password.”
  3. Use a combination of characters, letters, and numbers that you can remember, but that no one could guess.
  4. Make sure you haven’t already used your password somewhere else on the web.
  5. Consider a password generator that will create a strong password for you.
Most importantly, never share your password with anyone else. Facebook will never ask for your password in an email or Facebook message.
If anyone tries to obtain your password, ignore them or report them to Facebook immediately.

2. Set up two-factor authentication
Security experts recommend more than a strong password to protect your accounts. You can set up two-factor authentication (also known as 2FA), which is like having another locked door to protect your account.
When you set up 2FA, you will login to your Facebook account with your password like normal. But then you’ll be asked to enter a code to gain access.
The code is sent to your phone. Basically, Facebook uses this code to verify your identity. If a hacker knows your password but doesn’t have your phone, they won’t be able to access your account.
How to I set up 2FA?

Login to Facebook and click the down arrow in the top right corner

Select Settings > Security and Login

Under Use two-factor authentication, click Edit to enable.

3. Familiarize yourself with Facebook’s extra security features
Once you have a secure password, you can take things further with Facebook’s extra security features.
You can:

  • Log out of your Facebook account on another computer or device
  • Check where you’re logged in
  • Set up alerts for unrecognized logins
  • Set up trusted contacts to help recover your Facebook account if you get locked out

And more…
This should give you a good start, but see part two of this post to take your Facebook account security even further!

4. Don’t accept friend requests from people you don’t know
Receiving a friend request is exciting and flattering at once. Awesome! Someone wants to be your friend.
Before you accept a friend request, you should ask yourself a few questions:

  • Who are they?
  • Do you know them?
  • Why are they trying to be your friend?
Only accept the request if you know the person adding you.
Scammers often create fake Facebook accounts to friend people and steal information to use for their own personal gain. (Remember, we told you in tip #1 that hackers can guess passwords based on profile information.)
    What could go wrong?
You might think accepting friendship isn’t a big deal. But if you become friends with the wrong person, they can spam your timeline, tag you in posts that aren’t relevant to you, and even send you malicious messages. Not to mention they’ll have access to the wealth of information you may put on your Facebook profile.
How can you tell who’s a real friend?
If you don’t know who is requesting your friendship, check to see if you have mutual friends. That might help jog your memory.
But when in doubt, simply reject the request or block and report the user.

5. Think before you click
We all get a little click happy sometimes. But be careful with this behavior, because it can put you, your computer, and your personal information in jeopardy.
Malicious software can damage your computer, your server, or even your computer network. Often, all it takes to infect your computer is a single click.
How can you tell if your Facebook account has been infected?
You may notice these signs:

  • “You” have posted spam or sending unwanted messages: You may see posts you don’t remember making on your page, or friends’ pages. Friends may report getting strange messages that you didn’t send.
  • “You” are logged in from strange locations: Check your login history by reviewing tip #2 and reviewing the Where You’re Logged In section
  • You don’t recognize posts you’ve shared on Facebook: Learn how to check your activity log
    Be suspicious of links
As a general rule, never click on any links unless you are 100% sure where they go.
Yes, you should even be suspicious of links that come from friends or Facebook pages you trust. Scammers know how to mask their content!
Remember: Facebook will never ask you for your password in an email.
If you see a suspicious link on Facebook, make sure you report it so no one else becomes a victim.

6. Run a Security Checkup
Still not sure you’re secure? Facebook can check for you.
Visit Facebook’s Security Center to start your security checkup.
Facebook’s Security Checkup will log you out from unused browsers and apps and give you further tips on how to protect your password. You can also set up alerts for any instance where someone tries to log into your account from an unrecognized device.
Be safe, be vigilant
See? Facebook security isn’t as scary as you thought. It’s actually quite easy to keep your account secure, and much of that comes from you being a smart user. Know what traps to look out for and avoid clicking them or giving out any of your information (especially your password) to help keep the hackers at bay.
Stay on the lookout for part two of our Facebook security series: What to do if your Facebook is hacked.

Following these steps you will definitely keep your Facebook account safe and secure!

Dear Female Entrepreneurs,

“My mother told me to be a lady. And for her, that meant be your own person, be independent.“ Ruth Bader Ginsburg

Ruth Bader Ginsburg earned her bachelor’s degree at Cornell University, began law school at Harvard, then transferred to Columbia Law School where she graduated tied for first in her class. She was one of the few women in the law program at each school she attended but was still determined not to let her minority status shake her. After she graduated, despite all her qualifications, no one would hire her – because she was a woman.

She turned to teaching, one of the only fields that would accept her at the time, and taught civil procedure with an emphasis on the advancement of gender equality and women’s rights. She later advocated as a volunteer lawyer for the ACLU and won multiple victories before the Supreme Court.

Ruth’s stance in every argument she makes is that both genders should be treated equally in the eyes of the law and that our laws and rights should change based on the changing society we live in. She’s a powerful example of someone who lives her beliefs and isn’t afraid to voice them.

“Women belong in all places where decisions are being made. It shouldn’t be that women are the exception.” -Ruth Bader Ginsburg

Dear Yoga Enthusiast,

Whether you’re trying to kick your caffeine habit or just need a little extra something to boost you out of a rut, yoga can provide tremendous energy. Luckily, you don’t need a full hour-long class to reap the benefits!

According to Integrative Psychology, your body is made up of four factors: the mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual (or energy), and what affects one affects all. If you’re mentally overwhelmed or physically drained, your whole self will suffer, so it’s important to check in with each factor individually and tend to their needs.

If you’re looking for more grounded research, there’s tons of scientific evidence (http://www.apa.org/monitor/2011/12/exercise.aspx) that physically active people are less depressed than inactive people because of the increased levels of serotonin.

More serotonin equals a boosted mood, which equals, more energy, and more restful sleep, which ultimately equals a healthier self.

What makes yoga the ideal form of exercise for boosting your mood (and health) is that it takes your physical, mental, emotional AND spiritual self into account, resulting in a well-rounded, more energetic, and happier you!

Most of the energizing poses in yoga are openers; chest openers, shoulder openers, hip openers. So try to really focus on those poses during your practice if you’re trying to create more energy.

Another favorite energy gathering pose is downward dog, I fold myself into it whenever I feel groggy and the opportunity presents itself. Down dog gets blood flowing and calms the brain. This pose is particularly special because it offers a stretch while remaining grounded and strong all at the same time.

Warrior poses also help ignite energy! Something with the wide stance is sure to invoke feelings of power that can brighten the flickering flame inside of you.

Dear Friends,

In the last decade, there has been a rise in trendy juice bars popping up that offer signature juice blends catered to health-conscious people. This is because juicing has become widely accepted as a premium way to get fruits and veggies into your diet quickly and easily.

And let’s not forget the amount of fruits and vegetables! On average, a 4-ounce cup of juice contains a whole serving of vitamin and mineral rich fruits and vegetables. These powerhouse foods contain nutrients that help to protect your body against inflammation, cardiovascular disease, and even cancer. Plus, juicing removes the fiber from fruits and vegetables which allows those nutrients to absorb very quickly into the gut and bloodstream.

Another wonderful benefit of juicing is the boost of chlorophyll (the green pigment found in plants) it gives the body. Chlorophyll is great for rebuilding red blood cells, helping to detoxify the liver, and protecting the skin from toxin absorption from the environment.

When discussing the benefits of juicing, it is important to note that we are referring to juice purchased at a juice bar or made at home with a juicer. Often bottled juices from the store have added ingredients, namely sugar. Be on the lookout for that if when making a purchase. Fresh squeezed is the best option!

Here are some great, chlorophyll rich greens to add to your juice:
-kale
-spinach
-cucumber
-parsley
-beet greens
-wheatgrass
-celery
-romaine lettuce

If you have a juicer at home, try this mouthwatering recipe that is loaded with healthy goodness:

Beetroot and Ginger
(For 2 pints)
4 beetroots
4 carrots
2 lemons
6 apples
4 inches of peeled ginger

You want your juice to be as fresh as possible, so cut this recipe in half if you will only be consuming one serving at a time.

Dear Friend,

As you’ve collected by now, a big part of practicing yoga is being present in the moment and focusing on each breath you take as you move through time and space.

Another word for that: mindfulness.

Mindfulness has many definitions and can mean a lot of different things to different people, but in essence, it means to practice BEING in a non-judgemental state of complete awareness of one’s thoughts.

Practicing yoga is a way of being mindful. Meditation and pranayama breathing are acts of mindfulness as well.

Why be mindful? It keeps us from harming ourselves and others. By tending to ourselves and our own needs and understanding our being so intrinsically, we allow ourselves to move through the world in a more positive way, and in turn, we attract positive things.

Why? Lots of reasons, but the most common excuse is that often, we’re too busy. But with all the evidence that focused breathing and meditation is beneficial to our overall health, shouldn’t we be paying more attention?

Here are some scenarios where you might benefit from snapping into some breathing exercises:

-While driving: Road rage is real and even the most mindful of us can find ourselves slipping into panic mode when someone does something unexpected on the highway. Instead of lashing out, take three deep breaths.
-Don’t drive? How about when you’re at the mercy of someone else’s driving — or someone else’s schedule in general? You know when you have plans with someone and they’re late, how frustrating that can be? Or what about when a friend asks you for advice but then doesn’t take it?

Next time, instead of yelling, ‘I told you so!’ or holding a grudge, try excusing yourself for a few moments to collect your thoughts and focus on your breathing. I guarantee you’ll feel some kind of transformation!
